Greene Connections

FOR PRESIDENT'S DAY: A unique Greene County, Pennsylvania, connection to U.S. President Benjamin Harrison is revealed via several photographs sent to Waynesburg from Washington, DC in the late 1880s and early 1890s.

This particular photograph is of John Witherspoon Scott [1800-1892] - husband of Mary Potts Neal, son of Rev. George McElroy Scott & Anna Rea. John Witherspoon Scott was the father-in-law of U.S. President Benjamin Harrison and passed away while living with the First Family at the White House.

A handwritten inscription on the back of this photograph addresses it to his niece, Mary (McFerran) Munnell [1836-1910] of Waynesburg, Pa., and reads: "To Mrs. Mary Munnell from / her affectionate uncle, / J. W. Scott / Wash. D. C. / Jan. 1, 1888."

In terms of the family tree, First Lady Caroline Lavinia (Scott) Harrison and Waynesburg-resident Mary (McFerran) Munnell were both granddaughters of Rev. George McElroy Scott & Anna Rea.

Original, professional photograph from C. Parker, 477 Penn. Ave., Washington, D. C.

Evan T Williams II shared this photo of the old mansion (The Boatel) which was published in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette in 1961. In doing research for my new book, I came across quite a few tragedies at Jacobs Ferry...... May 1929 a 14 year old boy shot his father; September 1929 a 45 year old man was shot; June 1936 a 65 year old man drowned; and July 1963 a 14 year old drowned......there are others. But I thought how sad it is that so much sadness was at the Ferry landing.

Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Over these four days people are invited to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.

Double-lane covered bridge over Ten Mile Creek, located near the intersection of High and Greene Streets in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. The area on the eastern side of the bridge is where we would recognize McDonald's to be located today.

Freedom Bridge seen in this series of images, during and after construction, replaced the covered bridge in 1928. As of 2018, a new incarnation of Freedom Bridge has been completed at this location.
