A 5D Understanding of our 3D Surroundings. www.5dguide.com New York is a city of over 8 million realities and the works of art in public spaces all over the different neighborhoods help reflect that diversity.

I am actively involved in making videos for this video blog about public art in New York in an effort to share with the world this wonderful creative collective. To be able and convey what I have learned I had to choose an out-of-the-box name for this project. It’s called 5D GUIDE NYC, a five dimensional guide to New York City. Today back in 1932 is when the famous black-and-white photograph "Lunch atop a Skyscraper" was taken during the construction of the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.

The photograph depicts eleven men eating lunch, seated on a girder with their feet dangling 256 meters (840 feet) above the New York City streets. It was taken on the 69th floor of the RCA Building during the last months of construction.
According to archivists, the photo was prearranged. Although the photo shows real ironworkers, the moment was staged by administrators at Rockefeller Center to promote their new skyscraper.

The photo first appeared in the Sunday photo supplement of the New York Herald Tribune newspaper on October 2 1932.

Incredible how we are now at two decades 😔

Connecting remembrance from sea to shining sea is artist's Heath Satow "Reflect" 9/11 Memorial in Rosemead, California.

The sculpture consists of 2,976 doves (one for each soul lost on 9/11) joined together spiraling upwards to form hands that cradle a damaged I-beam from the World Trade Center.

The work is 7 feet tall and 10 feet wide and is made from polished stainless steel and a damaged, rusted I-beam from the collapse of a WTC building in NYC.

Today the Empire State is guided by its first woman Governor: Kathy Hochul, born in Buffalo, NY.

Hochul was sworn-in as the state's 57th governor during a private midnight ceremony at the state Capitol. She will be sworn-in publicly later today.

Best wishes to her! May her work be guided by principles of good and equitable democracy.

Walk to the Great Lawn in Central Park

Yesterday this guide worked the great Homecoming Concert at the Great Lawn in Central Park. Unfortunately the event was cut-short by weather.

This guide had a feeling. 'Tis why I finished my walk to the Great Lawn a few weeks ago with the words: "this is a landscape that will reveal to us, and future generations, the TRANSCENDENTAL POWER that NATURE ALONE has to RENEW and REVITALIZE us." https://bit.ly/3mjVoXn

Thank GOD this is not the plague we are living these days!

This is The Plague of Ashdod. It is also known as The Miracle of the Ark in the Temple of Dagon, by the French artist Nicolas Poussin. Ashodod is the sixth-largest city and the largest port in Israel accounting for 60% of the country's imported goods.

This 16th century painting represents a story from 1 Samuel in the Old Testament.

The original painting currently hangs in the Louvre in Paris.

Poussin was commissioned to paint The Plague of Ashdod by Fabrizio Valguarnera. Fabrizio Valguarnera was a Sicilian merchant who was put on trial for laundering money through the purchase of this painting.

Art history is CrAzY.

On this date, back in 1977, the lights went out in New York City.

The massive power-failure was caused by lightning striking power plants. Millions were stranded in buildings, communication systems were disrupted, slowing fire-fighting efforts, encouraging looting and end-of-the-world chaos.

By the time the power came back, 25 hours later, arsonists had set more than 1,000 fires and looters had ransacked 1,600 stores.
