Our latest installment on our blog is the first of a two-part article by Dai Vaughan, who has written about the journey he has taken alongside his wife Jenny.

https://artsandcraftstours.com/blog/discovering-margaret-macdonald-mackintosh

From their humble beginnings as farmers in the northwestern island of the Outer Hebrides to becoming highly acclaimed artists across Europe, this dynamic duo is well known for their award-winning murals and armature sculptures. But with one life-changing event, they became intrigued with the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, and began creating replicas of Mackintosh's beautiful gesso panels.

For those of you who know Peter Trippi, perhaps from the wonderful tour he guided for us several years ago on the work of J.W. Waterhouse, and for those of you who would really delight in meeting him, even virtually, here is a FREE lecture Peter will be doing on Thursday, June 10 at 5:30pm, EDT.

Our latest article is by Jessica Douglas Home, whose most recent book is about the marvelous wood craftsman William Simmonds. Jessica was going to write about him, and I encourage you all to read her book, but in the meantime a good deal has been going on in the way of new home building – and not all of it positive.

https://artsandcraftstours.com/blog/ernest-gimson-works-key-to-future-of-british-housing

As you will read, there is much going on around England in the cities and in the countryside which would not be at all what William Morris and most of the other arts and crafts architects and designers would find to their liking, in fact it is almost diametrically opposed to their work and beliefs.

On our summer tour William Morris and His Influence, you will have a chance to see much work by Morris, and Gimson and to have dinners in private homes by Detmar Blow and by Ernest Barnsley. We will also visit Sapperton where Gimson was given by the then Lord Bathurst a cottage to live in, in exchange for his work.

A Trip Down Memory Lane at Standen | Arts And Crafts Tours

One of the wonderful sites we will be visiting on this summer’s William Morris tour is Standen which is a very special house and garden, certainly one of Philip Webb’s most important houses. Before we enter the house, we will be given a short history of the house and of the Beale family who commissioned it. But it is, of course, not just the house itself but its quite extraordinary contents which we believe will be of special interest.

We are remarkably lucky for as you will see from Peyton’s latest article he has had a long and quite intimate association with Standen and some of its later history including items he sold to and for the Grogans. Here are some beautiful outdoor images of Standen and a sample of the interior furnishing you will be able to see.

A Trip Down Memory Lane at Standen | Arts And Crafts Tours Our visit to Standen will be a trip down memory lane for me and an experience I look forward to sharing with you. Apart from the Beale family who bought the property and commissioned Philip Webb to design and build the house, there are two people, Arthur and Helen Grogan,…

The Women of the Arts and Crafts Movement 06/01/2021

The Women of the Arts and Crafts Movement

Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh was an English-born artist who worked in Scotland as a painter and designer. She was one of a group of women to first attend the Glasgow School of Art, appropriately named the "Glasgow Girls" by William Buchanan in 1968. Her work was inspired by Celtic folklore, mythology and literature and she was best known for her use of gesso, a technique taught at the school by Francis "Fra" Henry Newberry.

In the 1990’s there was a major exhibition of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh which included much gesso work by his wife, Margaret and also reproductions of her work by two extremely talented artists – Dai and Jenny Vaughan. You can see just how intricate and glorious this work is in these two videos:

On our September tour, Women of the Arts and Crafts Movement, we will be able to go with Dai and Jenny and see much of the work by the Glasgow Girls as well as that of Dai and Jenny. https://bit.ly/WomenOfTheMovement2021

Read Peyton’s excellent article in the Summer 2020 issue of the Useful and Beautiful, a publication by the William Morris Society in the United States, provides the history on the reawakening of an appreciation of his work and others of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

We wish to thank the William Morris Society for allowing us to provide a link to Peyton's article (which you will find on pages 23 to 29). And you may want to consider joining the Society especially as we will be offering a 10% discount on our upcoming tours to their members.

A Lincoln Surprise - Bloomsbury at the Cathedral | Arts And Crafts Tours

We are so pleased to be offering another article by Simon Chesters Thompson on our website. https://bit.ly/3eABhPe

This one is on the extraordinary work and story of Duncan Grant’s mural at the Lincoln Cathedral. Many of you will know his work from our Bloomsbury tour – as well as your travels. It is only more recently that his mural in Lincoln has been available to see.

A Lincoln Surprise - Bloomsbury at the Cathedral | Arts And Crafts Tours I’m a local now, and when out walking my dog across the flatlands a dozen miles south of Lincoln, the cathedral’s an abiding skyline presence – just as it would have been for those working this land nine hundred years ago. For Lincoln is probably England’s most spectacularly set cathedral,.....

We recognize that America is not yet out of the woods for several reasons but it’s a lot of fun to think about where you most want to go.

And since Arts & Crafts Tours is offering very liberal terms for making reservations for our summer and fall tours, you can give yourself the ability to make your plans and still have the security of being able to cancel without jeopardy should events related to COVID require your cancellation.

That’s the very best feeling you can have to plan a trip to experience truly beautiful places, buildings, furniture, and art all in the company of a small group of like-minded people with whom you’ll share great meals and conversations.
