Have you heard of Uniworld River Cruises? Uniworld offers a luxury experience and is now offering their "Best Offer," with 30% savings on select sailings. Here's what Holly and Rich E. of Germantown, MD have to say about their Uniworld experience along with their Barcelona visit after their cruise to Provence:
"We had the most wonderful vacation - thank you so much for helping us with this. The SS Catherine and the crew/staff were wonderful and attentive. We so enjoyed all of our meals and the wines pairings. The waitstaff were entertaining and attentive. Interacting with them and learning where their homes were was interesting and fun. The excursions offered were so wonderful. We learned about each of the villages/towns/cities we visited and the guides, well they were beyond wonderful. The stories told about the history of the area and the commentary that went along was at times hilarious! Our guide in Viviers, Frances, was the best - not only did she live in the village, she opened her home to us to allow us a glimpse of the homes that have existed for hundreds of years. What a treat. We did participate in some of the additional excursions and had the pleasure of seeing a chateau built in 1190 and still operating as a vineyard. The Comet's family is living in the chateau and gave us the history of how it had grown and changed over the centuries. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch of boeuf bourguignon with cheesy potatoes paired with his family's wine. Such a wonderful experience.
Barcelona is a really beautiful city and we toured the Picasso Museum, the Sagrada Familia - this was unbelievably beautiful and something not to be missed. The Park Geull, the public area only - we missed being able to tour the park itself because of the timed entries requirement but something to catch the next time we visit. The area around the Picasso Museum was fascinating and we wondered around for hours - having paella on La Ramblas and wondering through the market. So much to see and do. We had dinner at a waterfront restaurant - had to see the Mediterranean Sea!
We are definitely going to do another river cruise with Uniworld! We just need to determine the when and the where."

Arriving in Monaco near the bottom of the cliff that holds the Prince’s castle overlooking the sea is really magnificent. The number of cruise ships shuttling people to land, in addition to the choppy seas that couldn't be felt on the Quest, but made tendering a sporting event in itself, made for a very busy port on race day. We're not big race fans, but we were lured to town to experience the vibe of the gathering of those who faithfully follow Formula racing.
We didn't have tickets for the race, and while they could be purchased on race day, we opted to forego tickets since we arrived into town just as the race was starting. We worked our way up the hill with the loud sound of the powerful engines evident all over town. We could see a sliver of the race from far away which I must admit, did not quite scratch the itch, but it'll have to do. We made our way back into town, which was lined with vendors selling all sorts of race paraphernalia. We were able to watch the rest of the race on a gigantic screen in a crowded area of town set up just for that.
After the race thousands of people moved from their track-side seats into other parts of town which became congested quickly. Friends we met on the ship stayed on in Monaco to enjoy drinking champagne and shaking bottles and releasing the bubbly randomly into the air. These festivities were included in their ticket price of around 1,500 euros each to be in a balcony hotel suite overlooking nearly a third the track (which is actually a great view). They ambled into town when post race champagne festivities quickly ended to find Liam Gallagher from Oasis live in concert just in front of the Monaco Maserati dealership. As you can already surmise, this was not the day to sightsee in Monaco, but an 18 hour port stay allowed passengers to stay in town into the wee hours if they chose. All aboard for departure was not until 2:30 a.m.!
We enjoyed the Quest so much, we returned to take part in the “White Night" festivities around the pool that included a dinner menu of lobster tails, various meat, fish and vegetarian entrees, salads, cheeses, pastas, beautiful ice sculptures, wine and desserts as well as dancing to the Quest orchestra in the open air venue.
Earlier in the trip we enjoyed massages in the onboard spa. The Quest is equipped with a great workout facility with various complimentary classes throughout the day.
Packing, along with saying our goodbyes to several new friends finished off the evening.
After our last delicious breakfast on the ship it was time for disembarkation. It was a simple process with no wait on the Quest. I would highly recommend having transfers booked in and out of Nice. Relying on a taxi at the stand promises to be a wait unless you hit it just right. An Uber when cruise ships come in can be 2-3 times a normal rate because if the high demand. We can book private or shared cars to alleviate the hassle.
Sadly we're nearing the end of our journey and are off to the train station to take the TGV (high speed train) back to Paris before we fly home. Flying from Nice back to the U.S. is preferred if you don't care to spend time elsewhere. The timing of the train schedule and the almost six hour train ride costs an extra day away from home, so flying and booking early is the way to go. Nice is not far from Monaco, so prices increase and availability decreases the closer you book to race time.
We'll be posting more about Azamara cruises in the next couple of days. It's the perfect product for some, whether it be for a future year’s Grand Prix or perhaps a purely relaxing or culture filled vacation with their longer port stops. The experience on board was top notch.
Thanks to those who came along with us on Facebook!
Waking up with our stateroom facing Monaco, on race day provided much excitement. We, and many enthusiasts, anticipated this day. The first task was to flip on our television/information center and order our in-room breakfast. If you order enough, or in our case too much, you'll find two well-trained servers delivering your breakfast to your linen covered table on your balcony. Tres bon!
Without being onshore yet, the excitement builds. Luxury cruise ships line the water, and yachts sail by and anchor close to shore. Breakfast includes helicopters flying overhead delivering race goers to town from surrounding airports. The sounds of race car engines can be heard with the running of Porsche and other races prior to the big F1 race this afternoon. Tenders are bobbing on the sea, carrying excited passengers to shore. We will make our way to town.
St. Tropez is a small, vibrant town with a beautiful marina that was buzzing with activity when we arrived. We opted to sleep in and go into town around 1 p.m. We've never encountered more than 10 or so guests on a tender and Azamara runs two tenders between ship and port continually, so we've not had to wait. Thirteen hours in port again, allows us many options.
Every designer is represented in its own storefront. We moved past Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, and all the rest in favor of finding a little shop where sandals can be custom fitted and handmade. The famous shop has been hand making sandals for St. Tropez goers for nearly 100 years.
Many well behaved and fancily coiffed dogs walk nicely with their well coiffed owners around town. More gelato, beautiful tasty pastry and outdoor cafes line the streets and the waterfront . Today we opted for a taste of the famous Tarte Tropezienne, a sponge cake with a cream filling. We took it to go and had it at the Mosaic Cafe on the ship, a delightful coffee shop where you can have your choice of specialty coffees made to your liking. Small bites can accompany your coffee, served by cheerful staff in a lovely setting, compliments of Azamara.
A visit to St. Tropez might be incomplete without a trip to one of the gorgeous beaches frequented be the rich and famous. The beach is lovely and had many visitors on a perfect-weather afternoon.
It's a lovely group of friendly people on the ship. We've seen a couple of teens and one baby, several 30 somethings, but mostly 40s-70s as you’d expect. I have my 18 year old with me and she's having the time of her life! Most we've met are looking forward to race day in Monaco. More on that later.
A special dinner then into the onboard casino for a little blackjack rounded out our day.
