Great news for the end of the year!
WE DID IT! Thanks to your overwhelming generosity, we met our goal of raising $10,000 – and a few days early! 🌲🌿🍁🐿
But we’re not done yet.
A generous donor has committed to matching, dollar for dollar, every additional donation that comes in between now and December 31 – up to $2,000. The more we raise, the more we can help the Civic Association of Hollin Hills meet the needs that are anticipated to arise in our parks in the next few years. Any amount you are able to give - $5, $10, $25 – will have double the impact!
If we can take full advantage of this matching opportunity, we will raise an additional $4,000 for our parks! These funds may be used to support the anticipated needs we’ve previously highlighted:
• Stabilizing the edge of Voigt Park along Rippon Road, including the parking pad
• Completing repairs to the Voigt Park playground structure
Replacing deteriorated park entrance signs as needed
• Please help us take advantage of this opportunity to have an even greater impact on our parks! Every dollar helps us preserve and enhance the safe and enjoyable outdoor spaces we have right here in Hollin Hills. THANK YOU for your support!

From @docomomous- “You notice the difference the minute you turn off Fort Hunt Road. The houses are modest, nestled into the landscape and they are not in orderly rows lined up with the street. Grass exists only in patches. Garage doors are hard to find. There are no six-panel front doors or shutters on the windows. And the windows – they’re huge! What is this place? It’s Hollin Hills, a neighborhood of modernist houses designed by architect Charles Goodman for developer Robert Davenport and constructed between 1949 and 1971. On October 10, join Docomomo US/DC's Virtual Tour Day of Hollin Hills, featuring an introduction to the neighborhood, video tours of the ALCOA "Care-Free" Home—one of only twenty-four built nationwide and currently undergoing renovations—and a two-story atrium house constructed of prefabricated panels.”
A taste of what’s coming to our May 1, 2021 House & Garden Tour!

Tickets already purchased for the postponed 2020 event will automatically be honored for the new date next year. The tour always sells out, so holding onto your ticket secures your spot and saves you some effort next year. But we understand that won’t work for everyone. Due to the manual effort required by our volunteer team to execute refunds, requests will be honored until Oct. 1, 2020 and will be processed on a weekly basis. We appreciate your patience. Following the refund period, remaining ticket holders will automatically be issued a replacement ticket for the new date.
In the meantime, there are several ways you can stay connected to the tour in the months ahead:
Support our sponsors! They’re sticking with us, so show them some love by checking out their websites or visiting their stores.
Visit the neighborhood! Hollin Hills is beautiful year-round and a great socially-distanced destination for walking, biking, running and hiking.
Stay tuned for some surprises! We’re cooking up some fun (virtual) ways for you to get a peek inside some of the neighborhood’s gorgeous houses and gardens. Be on the lookout for more details coming soon.
We couldn’t let this special day — the original date of the tour — go by without acknowledging how much we miss welcoming you to the community and sharing our story. To celebrate today from a distance, we’re asking our community to share photos and stories on social media using #hollinhills. It’s not the tour day we expected, but an excellent preview of what’s to come. Stay tuned!
Farewell to a Great Dane
One of the founding fathers of PP Møbler and a legend in Danish Modern furniture crafts, Ejnar Pedersen passed away yesterday. Just one day after his 97 years birthday. He silently fell asleep for the last time, resolved and in peace.
We will remember him as a great visionary with an extraordinary sense for quality and good design and the courage to make it. He was open minded and trusted by his friends and work relations and he enjoyed an amazing worldwide network of creative and inspiring people.
Ejnar was driven by the love of wood and of the people he worked and lived with. He left us with a great responsibility to carry on his legacy of quality crafts with the will to do an even better job each day than the day before.
He was loved by many, and he will always be remembered.
His legacy will live!
Hans arv vil leve videre!
We are mourning the loss of legendary architecture critic Michael Sorkin. Sorkin—a force in the architecture world—was revered by many in Hollin Hills where he grew up in the 1950s and 60s on Rebecca Drive. Our community is grateful for his contributions to supporting the preservation of our neighborhood. We send our condolences to his family. (Photo credit: Jeff Barnett Winsby)
Many of us in Hollin Hills are heading out to our parks to find some solace during these unprecedented times. Thanks to everyone for respecting a safe distance to keep us all healthy.
In light of recent developments surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Hollin Hills House + Garden Tour has been postponed. The health and safety of our community and all participants is our primary concern. We will continue to monitor the situation and will establish a new date as the situation resolves. All tickets will be automatically transferred to the rescheduled tour. Thank you for your continued support. Be healthy and safe.
We’re celebrating Women’s History Month by remembering the women living in Hollin Hills during the 1950s that were essential to creating the important sense of community that resonates throughout our neighborhood today.

In 1957 and 1958, Charles Goodman, FAIA, designed the “Care-free Home” for metals company Alcoa. The houses were uniquely constructed of “maintenance-free” aluminum and featured bright purple siding, blue window details, gold doors, wood paneling and vinyl wall coverings. One of the 24 “care-free” homes built is right here in Hollin Hills. Today, it’s being carefully restored by Lee Vanderpool Braun and Carbon Design Build. Follow @alcoahouse on Instagram to watch this architectural gem be brought back to life.
Instead of positioning homes square to the street, architect Charles Goodman, FAIA, sited the nearly 460 houses in Hollin Hills at unique angles so that they best took advantage of the natural views each setting had to offer.

“My creative juices began flowing wildly,” said architect Charles Goodman , FAIA, of his first visit to Hollin Hills. “It was the kind of land home builders avoided. To me it was the perfect land for residential living—in a setting of natural beauty that should be preserved at all costs in the process of development.” Photo credit: CMC Photography
Every house in Hollin Hills came with a custom landscape plan that the homeowner could implement. Lou Bernard (Barney) Voigt was the first landscape architect for the neighborhood. His vision was to create a park-like setting where each lot tied into the next seamlessly. After his untimely death in 1953 at the age of 37, landscape architects Eric Paepcke and Dan Kiley continued Voigt’s vision. Today, their Hollin Hills landscape plans can be found at The Library of Congress.
We’re rolling out the red carpet for the committee that’s taking the Hollin Hills House + Garden Tour to the next level. 🙌 Tour takes place Saturday, May 2. Tickets on sale now.
Boo is a 💔. She was found by her owners at six months old in the middle of the road in Delaware. Now, she’s—deservingly—living it up in Hollin Hills where she keeps a close eye on the neighborhood. On May 2, she’ll open the doors to her gorgeous home so you can see how she’s living a dog’s dream. Check out the complete tour details online: https://bit.ly/2H5AzJz
While Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Eero Saarinen were designing revolutionary case study houses for California to support the growing housing demand following WWII, Charles Goodman was breaking the mold in Virginia designing homes for Hollin Hills. Surrounded by brick colonial neighborhoods just south of Old Town Alexandria, Hollin Hills was starkly different offering a unique modern design with open floor plans, wide chimneys and walls of glass that were built with prefab parts. Today, the iconic neighborhood is historically preserved. (Photo credit: Tod Connell Photography)
Zach and Stine moved to Hollin Hills in 2015 after falling in love with its aesthetic, landscape and nature. Two kids later, they say they feel incredibly fortunate to be raising their boys among the special community Hollin Hills provides.

Renowned landscape architect Dan Kiley created a unique design for Hollin Hills that de-emphasized boundaries and leveraged the natural landscape.
