“On this day, take time to remember those who have fallen. But on every day after, do more; put the freedoms they died for to greater and nobler uses.” Richelle E. Goodrich
Memorial Day represents a day of national awareness and reverence, honoring Americans who died while defending the nation and its values.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May and honors Veterans who have died in all U.S. wars. Memorial Day differs from Veterans Day even though both federal holidays acknowledge military members. Veterans Day is an opportunity for Americans to publicly recognize living military Veterans while Memorial Day is a sincere reminder of the valiant women and men who have sacrificed their lives in service to the country.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War Soldiers. #MemorialDayMatters

It’s the Christmas Carroll House! Our December visitors get to enjoy the splendor of the season as well as the splendor of Cleveland.
We often tell our incoming guests about how great Cleveland is. Looks like we're in good company.
"Cleveland rocks: On stage in the eight theaters on Playhouse Square, at indie-music venue Beachland Ballroom, and in hip meat-lovers’ restaurants like the Black Pig and the Plum. Shop and stroll in the revived Hingetown neighborhood and Waterloo Arts District."
Did we mention the Black Pig is just around the corner?

And now the "after" photo! (See post directly below.) We think the hair and makeup paid off. What a beautiful bridal party, pictured at the Carroll Cottage's bar.
WHAT'S GOING ON AT CARROLL COTTAGE? No, it's not a movie set. Recently we had a bridal party spend a Friday morning getting ready for the Big Event. A breakfast spread, champagne and some music made for a great pre-event event.
You're just a quick ride to the largest outdoor chandelier in the United States... the GE Chandelier at Playhouse Square.
If you're coming in for the holidays, decorations should be up by Thanksgiving weekend. Stop for a cocktail at Parnell's Pub At Playhouse Square, Cibreo Italian Kitchen (fireplace!), District, Raving Med, Otto Moser's Restaurant or Puente Viejo.
And this photo? Taken by BTH Photography. (Can we get a print for Ohio City's Carroll Cottage?)

There's a lot of history in and around Carroll Cottage, which is nestled in Ohio City's Historic District. The quaint back patio is comprised of historic bricks including this one from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
How did this brick get here? Some World Fair bricks were made right here in Northern Ohio, manufactured by the Robinson Clay Products Co. of Akron, Ohio. They were used for street surfacing at the 1893 Chicago World’s fair.
Stamped into the bricks is a picture of Christopher Columbus discovering the “New World.” For their design, the bricks won the award for the best brick at the fair.
The bricks that were not used were brought to Cleveland and used to pave West 30th Street, right around the corner from Carroll Cottage. They paved part of the St. Ignatius mall. Many bricks were replaced and stacked around campus or thrown away. But not all. St. Ignatius sold off many as a fund raiser, including the one that now graces our patio.
Cleveland Pride! Ohio City celebrates diversity. This newly installed Ohio Historical Marker was unveiled June 2 in Ohio City. The marker unveiled Thursday commemorates the original site of the first LGBT Community Center in Cleveland.
Cleveland Councilman Kerry McCormack, who represents Ohio City, has been celebrating June as Pride month on Twitter, was part of the unveiling in Ohio City.
Ohio's first historic marker in honor of LGBT history was unveiled in Cleveland yesterday -- thanks in part to the efforts of alumna Phyllis "Seven" Harris, MNO, who is Executive Director of LGBT Cleveland Community Center. Last month she received the Cleveland Foundation's 2017 Homer C. Wadsworth Award, given annually to a leader who has demonstrated creativity, innovation, risk-taking and good humor in a civic, volunteer, nonprofit or public sector role.
