Hello everyone, I wanted to write to you to thank you for the wonderful stay at home. 8 wonderful days filled with emotions of all kinds. But above all, a lot of attention and love from all the staff. I felt really welcome. They really took care of me throughout my stay. Friendships have formed. I hope Marleen feels much better. I would love to meet her but I understand the circumstances very well. I left with broken heart and tears in my eyes because I left the beautiful Sable Sands family. Regardless of their title, all employees were important to me. I will try to return certainly and see all these beautiful people. What a beautiful unforgettable memory you gave me. Thank you all ... Thank you very much. And Thanks to Brent & Laurie for recommending this place. '' C'est Beau '' (means beautiful in French) Miss you so much, Lynda

Wildlife, Safari, Conservation, Earth Care, Culture, Vegan Friendly Food Loving Safari lodge; 2 hours from Victoria Falls, by Hwange Nat Park in Zimbabwe

On the edge of the world-famous Hwange National Park, on a private concession with stunning views over the dried riverbed named the ‘Dete Vlei’, stands the rustic eco-friendly safari lodge known as Sable Sands. Sable Sands has 16 traditionally thatched ‘rondavels’ with en suite bathroom, making your lodge the perfect blend of ancient culture, nature and modern convenience. The lodge is owner managed by Brian & Marleen Sabeta and has built up a great reputation for the enthusiastic team and hospitality. Sable Sands is situated on a forestry concession and the lodge harvests dead wood for cooking and heating up the hot water through wood boilers. A generator is ran in the evening for guests to charge their cameras and batteries, and lighting is provided through solar lights after the generator has made place for the sounds of nature at night. Limited wifi is available in the evening before and after dinner. This African forest home also has a tree house and a refreshing solar powered swimming pool. The main building composes of a dining area, lounge, library and bar and just in front there is a large outdoor fire pit where guests can have dinner under the stars instead of inside. From here you overlook the Dete Vlei, which frequently hosts wildlife visitors at the solar pumped water hole. Here you have a chance of seeing sable antelope, zebra and thirsty herds of elephant, buffalo, and if you are lucky you might spot lion, cheetah, painted dog, jackal and more. The Vlei is also renowned for its incredible bird population: no less than 350 different species in all. Safaris are conducted on the private and neighboring concessions or through pre booking inside the Hwange National Park (18 kms – 40 mins game drive to the entrance of the park). During the safari, coffee/tea/water or water and soft drink/beers are provided and included. Sable Sands does not offer any credit card facilities yet, and guests are asked to settle their extra’s (eg. laundry, bar bill, extra safari) in cash upon departure.

Mission: to enjoy and understand wildlife and nature better and to share our passion with people of all ages and cultures, it is called safari..

With this awesome special why not visit us at our 'Safari Home with the Earth, People, Conservation & Wildlife @ Heart’ and reconnect with nature and each other.

We have just completed a bee keeping course here in Mabale with 37 community members learning all about the benefits of keeping bees. This past year herders and women from the community have made bee hives, bee suits and even smokers so that all materials and skills are locally developed. Three test sites with bee hive fences are in place to test protecting gardens and fields from elephants. The benefits of bee keeping are multiple, protecting trees, bees, increased pollination and income generation. As climate change impacts this area more and more the importance of regeneration for all life is vital. Understanding the delicate balance between living things and how our actions can either break or strengthen these... we choose to strengthen!

Making predator proof livestock bomas! At the soft foot alliance we like to keep everything local, any equipment that we need we plan and design and train so that it can all be produced within the community that we live and work with. Here herders and other community members have been trained to make mobile livestock bomas using an industrial sewing machine. They keep livestock safe and they are moved around to fertilize fields, the results are amazing. Thanks to #sablesandslodge for the sewing machine.

Finally been able to spend a night at the lovely Sable Sands. Great to see all your hard work paying off Marleen and Brian. Cold beer - fabulous food - super comfy bed - great hosting by the lovely Chenai and lions roaring in the night. Perfect.

We asked our #team to submit #Earth friendly ideas per department; to implement and as competition. It had to involve waste management and they immediately wanted the communities to also benefit, which we loved!

They came back with a staggering 29 #recycle and #reuse ideas!!!

They invited Laurie from #SoftFootAlliance and Mr Sibanda as Mabale community member and Tash from #HwangeRecyclingtoArtProject and Steffen from a waist managed country to come and judge!

And the outcome?

First Golden Prize:
The Restaurant Team: John Million Lovemore and Rebecca : they want to re use and melt the left over Guest soaps to a liquid detergent for staff and restaurant linen!

Second Silver Prize:
The Kitchen Crew: Dereck, Simion and Jethro: they want to bring the organic waste to Dete and Mabale for pig feeding and compost projects!

Well done #SableSands Team!

We are So #proud of you and will
Continue this journey together:

Hello Sable Sands team ! Almost one year has passed but still remembering our great stay. Please say hi to everyone and a special "Bonjour!" to Roy - we can't thank him enough for the amazing moments we shared with the elephants.

It was such a pleasure The Safari Source. Their first African Safari and they see 16 lions and a leopard. How's that for a start to a honeymoon!!??
#thesafarisource #sablesands #safarivibes #hwange

Thank you Sable Sands for taking such good care of our Honeymooners! Private dinner by the fire and champagne on the house - that's the way to treat guests!
We are sure they are having a great time, even if the splashing elephants and roaring lions tried to keep them awake on their first night 😀

They've arrived ❤️ The colourful reusable glass waterbottles for our guests❤️
Great for their meals, in the rooms and on their safaris!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome a not-so-new addition to our Sable Sands family.
Chenai Dodzo previously lived and worked in Victoria Falls from 2006 until 2015, where she then left to further her education in Cape Town, South Africa.
Chenai completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing at the University of Cape Town in 2017 and remained there to gain valuable experience in corporate event management at one of the top Event Management Companies in Cape Town.
During her time in Victoria Falls, Chenai acquired extensive experience in both tourism marketing and operations at various companies including Shearwater Adventures, Ilala Lodge as well as some relief lodge management here at Sable Sands Lodge.
Not only is Chenai a dear friend and trusted professional, she is also the godmother to our daughter so it is seems only fit that she comes back home to us!
We are thrilled that Chenai is returning to the fold as the Marketing Manager of Sable Sands. Her role officially started on the 1st of May and she will be back in Victoria Falls on the 14th of May; we are beyond excited for her to bring her knowledge, experience and passion to the business.
Please assist us in welcoming her home and to also wish her a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Warm regards
Brian and Marleen

Happy Earth Day everybody!!
This year the Earth Day Network is on an "End Plastic Pollution” drive, if each of us commits to reduce our plastic consumption by even a little bit we will be taking huge strides towards cleaning up our land and oceans.

https://www.earthday.org/yourjourney2018/ offers a free toolkit on how to calculate and track your individual or organisation's plastic usage, as well as some facts and information on plastic pollution.

To do our bit, Sable Sands will soon be only using glass consol water bottles, bye bye plastic bottles :). Here are some very cool products that our sustainability partners in the Hwange and Victoria Falls areas are creating from recycled plastic.

It took Sable Sands Guests 16860 sips of wine for this stove....😲

Or make it 2810 glasses or 562 visible bottles, and plenty broken ones to fill up the base... yesss...

All these wine bottles were used in our latest edition of recycling to useful objects & art and we ❤️ it!!

Our team @SableSands is involved in Building with bottles, Cutting bottles and Decorating with bottles. Soon they practice it in their own communities, they are all inspired!

The neighboring villages Mabale and Dete make Beads and Jewelry from the bottles!!

Thanks Natasha and Roy for the start of many bottle building objects! We won't stop!

Our Story

On a private concession along the Dete Vlei at the edge of the world-famous Hwange National Park lies the rustic, eco-friendly safari lodge run by Marleen and Brian Sabeta. Marleen moved to Zimbabwe in 2005, leaving behind her life as a restauranteur with a very successful business in Holland. Brian, also from a hospitality background, uprooted his life in Harare the capital city of Zimbabwe; both were drawn to the rustic, enchanted life of the Victoria Falls area where they met. Before long they were married, managing a lodge and later owning a lodge and starting a family at this safari home and one of Zimbabwe’s hidden treasures - Sable Sands, Hwange.

The lodge rooms are 16 thatched ‘rondavels’ which are scattered along the vlei and nestled in the rosewood and teak forest. The traditional African home-style rondavels have en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets and very comfortable beds. Guests often watch elephants and splashing around in the solar-pumped waterhole or zebras rolling around in the dirt from their rooms or day-beds. To complete the Sable Sands experience, is the delicious, creative and freshly prepared food that comes out the little bush kitchen, guests are always looking forward to the next meal.

Safaris are conducted on both the private concession and in the Hwange National Park, the area is home to an abundance of wildlife including cheetah, sable antelope, African wild dog, lion, buffalo and the famous Presidential Elephants of Zimbabwe to name a few. There are also over 300 species of birdlife in the area making Sable Sands safaris a birdwatcher’s and photographer’s haven.

Ultimately, the charm of Sable Sands lies in their care for people, the planet and wildlife. Marleen and Brian are involved in various projects and initiatives that address community, conservation and environmental issues and their aim is to eventually become a fully responsible business - a Safari Home with the Earth, People, Conservation & Wildlife @ Heart’ that will leave a footprint on your soul.
