House Members Seek Apollo 1 Memorial at Arlington Cemetery

A bill has been introduced in the US House of Representatives (H.R. 6147) to build a memorial in Arlington National Cemetery for the Apollo 1 astronauts who died on January 27, 1967, when a fire broke out inside their Command Module. There are memorials in the cemetery remembering the crews of Challenger and Columbia who perished in 1986 and 2003, respectively. The bi-partisan legislation introduced by Texas Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson has several sponsors, and I hope that it will pass soon.

Please contact your Representative in the House to voice your support. In the meantime, you can visit the graves of Roger Chaffee and Virgil "Guss" Grissom, both of whom are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The third Apollo astronaut Ed White is buried at West Point. See: Learn about efforts in Congress to establish a memorial for the Apollo 1 crew at Arlington National Cemetery. Once barely surviving, the grass on the Mall gets a serious makeover

Much is happening on or near the Mall. I for one am glad the grass on the National Mall is near completion. I can't count how many times folks on my tour complained about the quality of the grass. It's true, with so many millions trampling the mall and with the soil being so bad, even the weeds wouldn't grow. Secrets of the ultimate lawn renovation.

National World War I Memorial Proposal Is Unveiled

A design has been chosen for a WWI memorial. If it is built, it will be located in Pershing park just a block from the White House. General Persing led the US forces in WWI. A plan for a privately funded war memorial would create a raised lawn with a sculpture on a 1.8 acre site near the White House, not part of the National Mall.

Before and after: Winter storm blankets Washington

The Post has published some great pictures of the memorials and iconic views of Washington after the blizzard. I especially like the Korean War Veteran's memorial covered in snow. The Washington region battled a heavy, snow-laden nor'easter that created near-blizzard conditions, with blowing snow and poor visibility. On the left, images of some of Washington's most iconic memorials are seen on Thursday, Jan. 21. On the right is how the memorial appeared Saturday near the heig…
