Heavy Traffic Expected On Seward Highway This Weekend

radiokenai.us The Alaska State Troopers are expecting traffic to be heavy on the Kenai Peninsula due to multiple events drawing visitors here and increasing traffic.

It’s been over a year but we thought we’d let former clients and friends know Captain Paul passed away. He was a gift to the LeSea Charters family and we’re very thankful for the precious time he had with us. Hope you’re fishing up high Paul. RIP

Seward, Alaska

Divers had to break up a thin layer of ice in the boat harbor before the Seward Polar Bear Jump could get underway today. Jumpers raised more than $106,000 for the American Cancer Society and countered below-freezing temps with courage and big smiles. Thanks to everyone who jumped, volunteered, and came out to support the 33rd year of this Seward tradition!

The Salmon Project

This time of year it can be tempting to order "salmon" off the menu, but if you're traveling in the Lower 48 chances are good that salmon is farmed.

And friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon. Here are a few reasons why:

Oh my! Be safe!

The eastern gravel embankment of Salmon Creek (locally known as Kwechak or Glacier Creek) has breached and water is flowing down Bruno Road from south of Cherrywood down to the end of Vinewood. Metco is mobilizing in the morning. Please do not drive through floodwaters!

When a bull moose was reported in a Kenai Peninsula lake trailing long lengths of cable around its antlers and neck, Alaska Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Technician Larry Lewis responded quickly. He knew that if the cable became snagged, the moose could be immobilized or strangle to death.

Because the animal was swimming, a tranquilizer dart was out of the question. So Lewis recruited two civilians with a rowboat to assist in catching and freeing the moose.

"This type of entanglement is fairly common with bull moose," said Lewis, "particularly in the fall (when rutting bulls are on the prowl, looking for a fight)."

Lewis recommends homeowners survey their yards and look for nonessential items such as swing sets, unused dog runs, cables and other things that bull moose might get tangled in and secure them to minimize risks.

Lewis is one of many Alaska Department of Fish and Game technicians and biologists statewide who deal hands-on with wildlife every day. They're a dedicated bunch, ready at a moment's notice to wade headlong into some incredible situations to help out animals in need.

Traffic is down to one lane. Please plan accordingly and give yourself ample time to make trips & appointments.
Take your time if you're coming from #Anchorage to #Seward. There's a 500+ acre fire at McHugh Creek approx 2 miles south of Anchorage. Smoke is making for hazardous conditions and possible low visibility. Alaska DNR- Division of Forestry (DOF) is actively working to control the blaze. Check Alaska 511 Traveler Information for road cams and other HWY conditions. Please Drive Safe & Remind Folks to be Fire Wise this Summer! #mchughcreekfire

July 19, 12:45 p.m. - The Alaska Division of Forestry is now estimating the McHugh Creek Fire burning south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway at 500-600 acres. The Seward Highway remains reduced to one-lane traffic with a pilot car from mileposts 108-113 and motorists should expect long delays – up to an hour – if they are traveling in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid travel on the Seward Highway in the vicinity of the fire unless absolutely necessary. [ 493 more words. ]
