Utah couple denied cruise ship boarding despite negative COVID-19 tests, vaccination

This is awful news, and we hate to hear it.

Travel insurance wouldn't have been able to help much in this situation either, because a cruise line turning you away at boarding isn't a covered reason for cancellation.

Additionally, if they had cancel for any reason, they would have had to cancel their trip 48 hours or more before departure—which is when the cruise line asked them to get tested. There wasn't much time.

We recommend opting for a Covid test even if you don't think it's required to prevent these kinds of things from happening. If you DO test positive and have travel insurance that covers cancellations due to sickness, you'd get 100% of your lost money back—definitely something to think about.

THINGS TO KNOW:

🏥 Pre-existing conditions CAN be covered by comprehensive travel insurance plans, but you have to meet certain requirements, like buying your plan at the right time and covering the full cost of your trip.

🚑 Travel medical & visitors insurance covers the acute-onset of a pre-existing condition, which is jargon for — “Oh, sh*t! This flare-up requires immediate medical care, and we’d better get to a urgent care or emergency room quick.”

👩🏽‍⚕️International health plans offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, and plans are individually underwritten for maximum personalization.

🧠 Mental health disorders are only covered if hospitalization is required, and we’ll talk more about mental health & longterm travel in the coming days.

Travel insurance doesn’t fall under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s not mandatory for insurers to cover pre-existing medical conditions. That’s because travel isn’t considered a necessity, even if it is for you. But the good news is you can still get covered if you know HOW.
