BREAKING: MMF researchers document the rare ornate eagle ray *twice*β€”One of the world’s most elusive ray species

Although the largest of all eagle ray species, ornate eagle rays are extremely rare, with few records from fisheries and a limited number of sightings in the wild. The majority of encounters are recorded from Australia and the Indo-West Pacific region (only one confirmed report exists from southern Africa, prior to this).

β€œThe moment I saw it, I knew it was something special and unusual,” says Janneman Conradie, MMF field researcher and logistics coordinator. β€œI had to double-check my footage because I couldn’t believe what I had seen. Then to see another within a few days was beyond belief. The Bazaruto Seascape is always full of surprises.”

What could be sweeter harbinger of spring than a bird's nest filled with tiny eggs? FoE bird expert and docent, Gina Barton, spied a dark-eyed junco swooping low into the brush along the trail and knew it was a sign a nest was nearby. Sure enough, five little juncos are waiting to hatch. 🐣 Our western bluebird monitoring team also reported the first hatchlings of the year. Edgewood is a great place for birders! 🐦

Cheesemans' CEO Gina Genduso Barton (seen bottom left) had the honor of spending the day with renowned botanist Bob Wernerehl on one of her surveys.

We had a special guest join the weekly wildflower survey hike last week. Bob Wernerehl, State Botanist of Massachusetts, was visiting family in the area, and posted some iNat observations from Edgewood that caught our attention. One cool thing about iNat is the way it can foster community.

We reached out and invited him to hike with the Wildflower Survey Team and learn more about the incredible biodiversity at Edgewood Natural Preserve. Despite the cool temps and cloudy skies, we had a great morning showing him many of our spring wildflowers. We're now BFF's (Botany Friends Forever)! πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

We encourage you to post photos of Edgewood plants and animals to iNaturalist. Our citizen scientists use iNat to track changes and new discoveries at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve.
