Fun Fact Friday - Art, Spirituality and Hope

This past week, after reconnecting with clients and finding some new ones, I went on a journey to explore places around me. I love to set out and see where the road will take me.

While in DC, I had the opportunity to go to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and The Phillips Collection.

A theme I have shared for 2022 is Hope. Going to these two places, I was able to experience instruments of Hope though Spirituality and Art.

David Driskell's works (featured through this weekend at The Phillips Collection) are amazing. They have an exhibit of Alma W Thomas' works also showing at the Phillips. (She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibit at the Whitney in NYC in 1972.) The two of them were influential in education in the Washington, DC area.

At the Basilica, I attended Mass in the Crypt and went exploring to find The Chapel of Our Lady of Hope. They are named this way to be an intercessor and focal point for prayer, not to be worshipped.

What I found from both experiences was how much Hope was alive in themes, education and expression.

Where do you experience Hope?

Thursday's Thoughts - Make Your Move

Last night in the Reflection Night I facilitate we talked about what our moves will be this year. Steps we are taking forward.

I saw these quotes and thought they fit for a reflection in this first week of the new year. I hope they inspire you as they do for me.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes…Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, DO it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
Neil Gaiman

“How few there are who have courage enough to own their faults, or resolution enough to mend them.”
Benjamin Franklin

“For a new year to bring you something new, make a move, like a butterfly tearing its cocoon! Make a move!”
Mehmet Murat Ildan

Wednesday's Word - Labyrinth

Last week I shared about my experiences with Labyrinths.

Today, I wanted to share a Finger Labyrinth when you cannot get to one in a physical location. This is from a website run by Dominican Sisters of Peace:

https://lnkd.in/epzD-374

Last night, I returned to the physical Labyrinth I found in DC after a heavy snowstorm on Monday. I was amazed (and pleasantly surprised) that the Parks Department cleared this labyrinth with the rest of the Georgetown Park.

In the times we live, it is important to center ourselves and Labyrinths are one way to meditate, focus and move forward.

Here are the steps to entering a Labyrinth if you use this form of meditation:
1. Prepare - Take a Moment to Relax and Reflect
2. The Journey In - Release Concerns and Quiet the Mind
3. The Center - Receive What This Moment Offers
4. The Journey Out - Review and Reflect
5. Exit - Carry the Experience Into Your Life

Tuesday’s Tips - Look Forward To Hope

With the surge of Omicron people are having varied reactions, however, there is frustration in many of those reactions.

Businesses were planning to have teams return to offices and have put those plans on hold for a few weeks to a "To Be Determined" status.

It is important to keep positivity and hope alive inside ourselves.

If you are part of a team at a business, school or non-profit, and want help with continued resilience, better communication skills and respect with DEI, reach out and I can help.

Here are some quotes to keep us going in this first week of the New Year:

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

“We can find a new hope every new day and every New Year.”
Lailah Gifty Akita

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’…”
Alfred Tennyson

Monday Motivation - Quotes to Motivate the New Year

“What do you need in the New Year? You need a dream; your dream needs an action; and your action needs right thinking! Without right thinking, you can have only unrealized dreams!”

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes…Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, DO it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
Neil Gaiman

“What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.”

Fun Fact Friday - Labyrinths and the New Year

When I lived in Seattle, we chose to go to a local church on New Year's Eve night because they had a labyrinth.

I had heard that this church, which was not far from where I lived, had an outdoor labyrinth and I felt it was a great way to end that year before entering into a New Year with all of its possibilities. They also setup inside labyrinths to experience different paths

Before we enter 2022, use the "Walking a Labyrinth" steps in the picture. There are ways to find local, public labyrinths in your area. Another way to use a labyrinth is to print one that you can trace with your finger in a meditative way.

Here are the steps:
1. Prepare - Take a Moment to Relax and Reflect
2. The Journey In - Release Concerns and Quiet the Mind
3. The Center - Receive What This Moment Offers
4. The Journey Out - Review and Reflect
5. Exit - Carry the Experience Into Your Life

My hope for all of us is that we can have focus and gain clarity above all of the noise in the world - To be able to live our full potential in our personal and professional lives.

Let Your Light Shine!

Cheers!

Thursday's Thoughts - Doubles and Reflections

There are two exhibits showcasing the works of Jasper Johns at two different museums in two different cities. The museums are working together to present "Jasper Johns: Mind/Mirror".

Same title for both exhibits, however, they are showing varied perspectives of the longest living active artist (according to a guide at one of the museums). The museums showcasing Johns' works until February 13, 2022 are the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The images below are from a section of the exhibit titled "Doubles and Reflections". I remember a conversation long ago where we were talking about two sides of every person's life and this portion of the exhibits really brought out that concept in art.

Recently, I heard a beautiful rendition of "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell sung by Brittany Howard accompanied by Herbie Hancock for the Kennedy Center Honors of Mitchell.

Jaspers' Art and Mitchell's song resonate the human spirit to look at things from different angles, perspectives, and sides.

A hope for 2022 that we allow our vision to expand and continue to evolve. Be more open-minded with people and have more patience and respect.

Cheers!
