A Mighty Girl

The wildly popular "Fearless Girl" statue will continue to stare down Wall Street's Charging Bull for another year thanks to a last-minute reprieve! New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that the statue, which was scheduled to be removed this weekend, will stay in place at least until April 2018. "This statue, the Fearless Girl, means so much to the people of New York City,” he said. “I’ve been profoundly struck by what this statue means in particular to women and girls in this city and this whole country.” On the steps of City Hall, Representative Carolyn Maloney also spoke about impact of the small bronze girl boldly staring down a raging bull: "The Fearless Girl inspires all of us to realize the power we have in ourselves, the power that women and young girls have everywhere. She was created to bring attention to the courage and unrealized power of women in so many fields — and she has clearly struck a nerve. She has become an overnight sensation.”

Created by sculptor Kristen Visbal, "Fearless Girl" was commissioned by the financial firm State Street Global Advisors in honor of International Women’s Day earlier this month. The statue was part of its campaign to encourage companies to add more women to their corporate boards and to celebrate “the power of women in leadership and the potential of the next generation of women leaders.” With locals and tourists alike flocking to take pictures with the statue, the firm said that the public response to "Fearless Girl" has been "overwhelming". Many young girls, in particular, have been eagerly posing for pictures with the statue, mimicking the girl's defiant pose, including 12-year-old Halie Redmond of Albany, New York, who exclaimed "Ohh, I just love her so much!"

At today's press conference, Maloney and several other female elected officials also called on New York City to increase the number of statues of women across the city. “Women don’t see themselves represented in the streets of New York,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. “We have sculptures and art of a lot of men and that needs to change.” Of the approximately 150 statues in the city, there are only 5 depicting women. Brewer also highlighted the current campaign underway to raise funds for a Central Park statue honoring suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. While improving women's representation in public statues and memorials will be a long-term effort, at least for the moment, the "Fearless Girl" will continue to be a powerful symbol of what Mayor de Blasio described as “standing up to fear, standing up to power, being able to find in yourself the strength to do what’s right.... She is inspiring everyone at a moment when we need inspiration."

And one of the students engaged a family on the subway (that's her kneeling on the left) for photos of them with their newborn.

Ever wonder what those funny looking towers on the top of many #NYC buildings are?

So do a lot of our tour guests! They're water towers. And although they've been around for centuries they became popularized in the mid nineteenth century as a method of storing water for a number of uses including fire, drinking, and waste in case electricity went out.

Largely outdated, they've now become an iconic part of the #NewyorkCity skyline and local citizens have taken to using them as canvases for public art.
