We were invited to speak on this week’s “Cruise Like a Traveler, Not a Tourist” panel at The New York Times - Travel Show, moderated by Cruise Critic’s Carolyn Spencer Brown. In case you couldn’t make the talk, here’s Judy Perl's key takeaway from the discussion:

Three ideas for your next trip:

- Consider donating much-needed school supplies and visiting a school in a rural village
- Take a cooking class in someone’s kitchen in a food-centric destination, like Italy or Mexico
- Hire a local “non-guide” guide (i.e., an artist, academic, or college student) to give you an unscripted orientation of their city, or teach you how to do a routine local habit, like navigate the subway or go shopping for groceries
