Classic Harbor Line

Sarah Pennington says that the key ingredients for the perfect harbor cruise are "a fun, bright and positive crew, a well-kept and comfortable vessel, some interesting details or inclusions, and ways to exceed people’s expectations on a regular basis." Classic Harbor Line

This was our fourth cruise with Classic Harbor, and the first on a yacht. We have enjoyed each trip immensely. The boats are well appointed and the crews are extremely friendly and professional.
We will take more cruises in the warmer weather.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, New York’s Huguenot Yacht Club held its annual Turkey Day Reach, the last big boat race on western LIS. Being on the shoulder season, some Turkey Day Reaches see sailors in shirt sleeves or light jackets while others make it obvious that December is just a few days away. This year’s was the later.

Forecasts for Saturday called for the unpleasant combination of low temperatures and strong winds. And this time the weather models were right. The temperature was 42 degrees and the wind blew steadily in the low 20s with gusts into the 30s. The weather kept many likely sailors home by a warm fire reading the newspaper or watching football. For the few of us who were prepared to race, we will have great memories of meeting the challenge of sailing under control in high winds.

A lot of people made good decisions that day. The ones who stayed home knew that either their boats or crews were not up to the conditions; some left the dock only to decide not to race once they felt the strong wind and biting cold at the racing area. The race committee wisely set a reaching-only course that had no tacking or gybing AND they set the course under the north shore of the Sound, which kept the boats out of the heaviest seas and biggest winds. The two boats that finished the race were sailed by the most experienced skippers and crews who reveled in the big blow. Artie Buhr’s Jeanneau 409 TIME OUT was first and my custom 40 SOULMATES corrected to second.

As a boat owner, I use the late November race as a reason to keep my boat commissioned for an extra six weeks after the normal close of the racing season. Late fall sailing offers crisp, clear days with great breezes and uncrowded water ways, which is perfect for memorable, day sails.

My partner and I were on your architecturral tour this morning and it was beyond anything we imagined. We loved looking at the city from the water and listening to insights from Aaron brought everything together! I will totally recommend this tour to my family and friends who go to NYC! Thank you for topping our trip to your lovely city!

Huge thank you to Classic Harbor Line Cruises today! The cruises are on beautiful 1920s style motor yachts.
The whole back end is enclosed in a glass observatory and is climate controlled.
The 1.5 hour cruise started at Pier 62 on the Hudson, went past Lower Manhattan, went by our beautiful Statue of Liberty, went up the East River to the Brooklyn Bridge, then returned to the Hudson River at Pier 62. It was truly an amazing day with non-stop incredible views! We had a couple drinks and some delicious snacks as well 😄
Thank you Classic Harbor Line for yet another awesome cruise up the Hudson River. Every detail was perfect: the weather, the captain, the crew and the refreshments! The private cruise for a large group is definitely the way to go. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely! We will be back for another cruising experience - next time around Manhattan. A huge shout-out to Adam for his expertise and patience in arranging our trip.
Going Back in Time
Yesterday I went for a sail on the 46-foot John Alden-designed schooner SPIRIT. For the first time in my life I sailed with a Fisherman's Staysail. The boat was a pleasure to sail on a warm-ish. late fall afternoon. Next up in new experiences will be to sail on the boat with a Golly Wobbler -- next spring. Adam Loory
