With all the mass gatherings in protests and the thousands at the funeral of George Floyd I question why Moravian Cemetary is still not operating for visitations on normal schedule. My 94 year old mother needs to visit her husband of over 70 years, and we, his children, are heartbroken. Allowances for one group and not all may be politically correct, but morally wrong- Moravian is an open air place that can easily be socially distanced.. with masks as well. Please open up this cemetery now.

Kidd’s buried treasure; A ferry boat captain whose most memorable achievement occurred during the Blizzard of 1888: his worst moment occurred when his boat hit the ferry terminal building; Author of the well-known history book “Morris's Memorial History of Staten Island;” A circus owner who performed at Coney Island’s Dreamland: his act featured elephants, tigers and lions; A detective assigned to Manhattan’s financial district who arrested pickpockets, purse thieves, and stock swindlers; The first Staten Islander to die in battle during WWI; A man who served in Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders; The inventor of the box kite; A man whose shipyard built a racing yacht for Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany; the shipyard employed 9,000 people during WWI.

On April 26, cleaning began on the headstone of Elizabeth Burton Groesbeck. The stone was covered with heavy lichen growth which hid the inscription and the distinctive soul effigy carving.
The cleaning process is still underway as the D/2 Biological Solution continues to work well after application, but the inscription is now completely legible and we can see the whimsical winged face clearly now. A late example of a soul effigy, it is also one of the best preserved.

They include: Geraldine Bonner (novelist, playwright, and writer of mystery stories); Anna Merven Carrere (landscape architect); Eva Watson (the first woman in Staten Island to get a hack license); and Eliza Holmes (Mrs. Betty Spicer) who was born into slavery.

Moravian Cemetery (founded 1740) offers guided tours thru its beautiful landscaped grounds. Cemetery historian and tour guide and promoter of local history, Richard Simpson says, “I can’t predict the future, but I can sure tell you about the past. It's up to me to keep people's memory alive by telling their real-life story.” Simpson has compiled biographical information for hundreds of people resting in the cemetery.
Simpson also answers requests from families seeking burial records which are important when researching: the cemetery's records date to 1867.
