Yvonne Brathwaite Burke celebrates her first anniversary as a Los Angeles County supervisor in 1980.
Born Perle Yvonne Watson on October 5, 1932, in Los Angeles, California she was the first African-American woman to represent the West Coast in Congress.
She served in the U.S. Congress from 1973 until January 1979.

Federal Marshal, Wallace Downs rides with Gail Etienne to McDonogh No. 19 Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 14, 1960.
