DID YOU KNOW THAT DREAMLAND IS A REAL PLACE?

A happy place on earth - not while you are sleeping, but in Coney Island, Brooklyn. It opened on May 15, 1904, and became one of the largest amusement parks in NYC. The park featured relatively high-class entertainment and dramatic spectacles (based on morality themes). The guests’ experience surely felt like a dream

Podcaster Nate DiMeo, gives a wonderful history lesson to the listener about Dreamland in his episode - The Memory Palace, Dreamland.

Nate really describes it well when he says, “And then the bulbs blinked on, a million of them, lighting up the night in the largest amusement park in the world, which was a hell of a thing to see.”

Join us to reminisce about the good times, and remember the magical place Coney Island once was in our Virtual Tour!

It's the 78th year of Fancy-Free ballet by Jerome Robbins, composed by Leonard Bernstein & designed by Oliver Smith. It premiered on April 18, 1944, at the old Metropolitan Opera House, New York.

HISTORY TODAY IN NYC

ICYMI, today is the 260th year of celebrating St. Patrick's Day. It's one of NYC's largest celebrations.

Did you know that the first St. Patrick's parade was held in lower Manhattan on March 17, 1762? The parade consisted of a band of Homesick, Irish ex-patriots, and Irish military members in the parade wearing green showing their Irish pride.

Five years later, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade has much to celebrate and for which to be thankful. This year is the Ireland 2016 Centenary Year. Senator George Mitchell is the Grand Marshal. And the Parade is scheduled to have about 200,000 people marching up 5th avenue.

Random History with SusanSez

DID YOU KNOW? 🤔

Today in 1997, Alfred Uhry's " The Last Night of Ballyhoo" the award-winning Best Play of the 1997 Tony opens in The Helen Hayes Theater (Broadway theater at 240 West 44th Street ), an unintentional play that was directed by Ron Lagomarsino.

The comedy/drama is about the Jews and their relationship with their religion and each other that took place in Atlanta, Georgia - December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta's elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season.

TODAY IN NYC HISTORY with SUSANSEZ

On February 12, 1879, Madison Square Garden NYC opened the 1st artificial indoor ice skating rink in North America.

They installed pipes underneath the 172,223 sq. ft floor and flooded the rink with 4” of water. They froze this water by adding a cold brine which created a slick, glassy canvas for ice skaters.

Many ice-related events take place here and in fact, MSG is the home arena for the NYRangers & NYKnicks team!

CAN YOU GO SKATING Madison Square Garden…? Yes! You can experience one of the best ice rinks in NYC to practice with your families, friends & teams!

WHEN? You can enjoy the ice all year round from Monday through Saturday from 12 PM to 6 PM. (No Sundays & Holidays.)

BE PREPARED
- MSG does not offer skate rentals or access to lockers
- There are no restrictions on bringing your camera & camcorders.
