🚨Ending March 9th! 🚨Land of the Blacks’ is a digital exhibition of graphics, maps, and photography illustrating 28 different land grants by Black people in the New Netherlands. This digital exhibition would be the largest acknowledgment of these locations and a resource to the growing interest to understand where these sites are located.

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, come check out the returning Oculus digital exhibition: Black Gotham Experience’s "The Land of the Blacks," commemorating Black landowners of New Netherland circa 1643. Artists Adrian Franks, Kamau Ware, and Pope Phoenix Illustration use digital artwork to celebrate and share the stories of Black lives in New York City’s early history. This exhibit will be on display on digital screens throughout the Oculus until Monday, March 7.

On Thursday, February 24 at 6pm, Westfield World Trade Center and Black Gotham Experience present “Fighting Dark,” a virtual event covering the full background of this exhibit. More info here: http://ow.ly/13xu50HXJSm.

By the 1640s, the “Land of the Blacks” encompassed over 130 acres of Manhattan in the neighborhoods now known as Chinatown, Little Italy, SoHo, NoHo, and Greenwich Village. Twenty-eight parcels were owned by free Black men and women and passed down through generations. This strong Black community petitioned for their rights, married, and baptized their children through the creation of New York City.

THURSDAY: Join Henry Street for the last installment of Justice Matters to US. This series of curated events discusses the practice of social justice within our communities, as experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd uprisings. Executive Director Darrell Waldron.

Artist Statement:
The sugar industry was fundamental to the creation of New York and as a consequence, baked into the commerce that took root in this region in 1664. The Black bodies that were here prior to the creation of New York and those that will come for generations after, both free and enslaved, were inextricable to the economies of the region and a global system that reached the West Indies, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, and the continent Africa. Families such as the Van Cortlandts, Phillipses, and Delanceys whose names mark places, enslaved people who were more than mere tools. The abolition of slavery is not only an action of the past but continues by liberating the elements of the souls of Black folk the archives kept hidden - their spark, their heart, their connection to the divine.

In Stealing Joy, a part of the Sugar Shadow series, I look at how Hester and Piero would have likely held each other in their gaze, fully aware of their shared humanity and love.

We were thrilled to host the kick-off event for the @waterfrontalliance’s annual #CityofWaterDay festival last Saturday aboard Wavertree! Remarks by Capt. Jonathan Boulware and Waterfront Alliance President Cortney Worall and many local officials centered on the risks of #climatechange and of the effects of rising sea levels on urban shorelines.

Visit the Waterfront Alliance site to learn more about the award-winning artists and actions that are part of this year's City of Water Day, and stop by to check out three art installations throughout the South Street Seaport Historic District!

Environmental multimedia artist Sarah Cameron Sunde's video work, will continue to be projected on the side of Wavertree from 7pm-10:30pm this evening and on September 25 and 26 for free to the public.

Kamau Ware’s “Waves” composition of four flags are on display on Front Street, symbolizing the connection between the Indigenous people of New York and the Africans from the Congo and Angola in the 17th century on the island of Manhattan.

Justin Brice Guariglia’s solar-powered LED warnings will be flashing every day at the corner of Front Street and Fulton Street.

“The Edge Within" is an Instagram collaboration with Works on Water and Black Gotham Experience for the Walking the Edge project. The prompts will be created by Kamau Ware.

Concept:
The Edge Within will be a series of prompts that asks people to get in tune with the water we have in our bodies and how it carries memories of our ancestors.

Context:
In creating Black Gotham Experience, it has been necessary to get in tune with redacted narratives in urban spaces. I often go on walks where the history happened and dial up my empathy and imagination to feel stories. It is not a scientific way of researching but it does complement what is discoverable in the archives and secondary sources to engage through meditation and kinesthetics.
