Did you know that in the heart of the West Village there is a beautiful federal style brick home that it’s known to be haunted? That’s right! Screeching stairs, sudden screams, food smells and the appearance of a tall elegant man wearing a top hat. No wonder! This residence at 12 Gay St. had multiple lives passing thorough; born as a stable in what at the time was not even a street but just an alley to accomodate the horses of the residents around, during Prohibition it became speakeasy the somewhat theatrical buccaneer-themed Pirate’s Den. Later on was bought by Mayor Jimmy Walker to use as its own pied-a-terre for his mistress,a Ziegfeld Follies showgirl, turning it for all practical purposes into a second mayoral residence.
So next time you walk around the charming little streets of the West Village try to imagine the mysterious past of the picturesque buildings as you take your Instagram shot…

Gorgeous example of Knit Bombing art in Harlem by @naomirag entitled Flowers Of Turtle Island. The knit and crochet work represent many of the native flowers you can find in North America, many of which were used by the Indigenous people even for medicinal purposes. The name Turtle Island refers to oral histories of the Native Americans, who used to tell stories of a giant turtle holding the World on its back.
