We conclude our South Dakota virtual trip with a book: Deadwood by Pete Dexter
Deadwood, Dakota Territories, 1876: Legendary gunman Wild Bill Hickcock and his friend Charlie Utter have come to the Black Hills town of Deadwood fresh from Cheyenne, fleeing an ungrateful populace. Bill, aging and sick but still able to best any man in a fair gunfight, just wants to be left alone to drink and play cards. But in this town of played-out miners, bounty hunters, upstairs girls, Chinese immigrants, and various other entrepeneurs and miscreants, he finds himself pursued by a vicious sheriff, a perverse whore man bent on revenge, and a besotted Calamity Jane. Fueled by liquor, sex, and violence, this is the real wild west, unlike anything portrayed in the dime novels that first told its story.

Hoh Rain Forest: feed your need for nature under a canopy of trees.
The Hoh Rain Forest, pronounced "Hoe", earns its name from the ever-flowing Hoh River that carves its way from Mount Olympus towards the Pacific Coast. However, where the name originates, is up for debate. The word "Hoh" undoubtedly comes from Native American languages, possibly the Quileute word "Ohalet" which means "fast moving water" or "snow water."
The diverse and dramatic Hoh Rain Forest is one of the most popular destinations on the Olympic Peninsula and beyond. Lush greenery abounds, thanks to an average 168 inches of annual rainfall. Mosses and ferns that blanket the surfaces add another dimension to the enchantment of the rainforest.
Explore rushing rivers, tumbling waterfalls and miles of trails through dense rain and old-growth forests. Herds of Roosevelt elk will accompany your views.

Hiking in the Olympic Peninsula: the Dungeness Spit
The Olympic Peninsula is home to the longest natural sand spit in North America. The Dungeness Spit just north of Sequim boasts breathtaking views, rich maritime history and an abundance of wildlife. It stretches nearly seven miles north into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and continues to grow by around 13 feet each year. Hiking the Dungeness Spit is a rewarding experience for all levels of physical ability.
If the New Dungeness Lighthouse is your goal, walk 5.5 miles along the sandy spit until the very tip. The lighthouse has kept its light on continuously since 1857. Visit the museum, take a free, guided tour offered daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and climb the 74 stairs to the top for a panoramic view of the spit, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Canada.
Be sure to pack food and water and check the tides before you go. Volunteers are on hand to offer helpful tips and guidance.
