Good morning beautiful Vancouver.

Photos from The Waterway Travel Team at Connoisseur Travel's post

By far, the highlight of the trip was taking a helicopter to Mendenhall Glacier to a sled dog camp. We all had a turn standing on the sled, playing with the pups and learning from an Iditarod finisher. Amazing experience.

We sailed Hubbard Glacier yesterday. It's a wonderous, seven mile long, 600 feet tall (350 feet exposed above the waterline) ice formation from a mountain 76 miles away that cannot be seen from the bay. See the photo with a thousand foot long cruise ship next to it for perspective. An onboard naturalist did a beautiful job narrating. Only one excursion is available to 125 people to get up closer on a smaller ship. Our friends who took the trip saw the calving glacier up close. They also saw sea otters and bears along the shore of the bay. Next up, Glacier Bay. Did you know that only select cruise lines are permitted to sail into Glacier Bay? The glass-domed train between Talkeetna and Whittier was wonderful. You can spend time in the lovely little town before you depart. Talkeetna is a small town with some shops and restaurants and an airport hidden behind the shops! Go to the Roadhouse if you're looking for breakfast. It was a great day seeing more of the land from Mt. Denali to Whittier.

Bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep - we saw them all. We chose to upgrade our Denali experience to go to the end of the road, Kantishna, 92.5 miles into the widerness. It's a 12 hour venture on the only road into and out of Denali National Park. There are three options for seeing the park. One that will give you a brief overview, a second that will bring you into the tundra, and the third that brings you as far into the park as you can go on the road. The full tour is so rich in history and wildlife. It's a long day, but worth it. Most people don't know that in order to do the longer tour you must spend at least two nights at Denali if you are on a pre or post cruise land tour. Stay tuned for more information and packing tips for a trip like this.

Traveling now is the perfect time to view the Aurora Borealis from just north of Fairbanks. Our travel mates did the late night trip into the darkness to get a view on a beautiful night. The weather is perfect. Mid 60's during the day. Today we hope to see moose, bears, other wildlife and Mt. McKinley as we venture deep into Denali National Park!

Come along with us on Facebook as we visit Alaska, from Fairbanks, deep into Denali then 7 nights aboard the Island Princess finishing up in Vancouver. Learn some things you might not know if you don't use a travel consultant who's well versed in Alaska. Fairbanks is a small city but what a great time meeting locals and taking a Chena Riverboat cruise where we had a bush pilot take off and land in the river right next to us (just for us). We stopped and saw the home and kennels of the late Susan Butcher, four time Iditerod champion, and visited the Chena Indian Village. What an amazing place Fairbanks is. If you have questions about Alaska, just let us know!
