RRPT offers photo tours for individuals looking for less classroom time more time in the field shooting! Sharing our knowledge of photography and photography techniques with people of all levels of experience, through learning in the field.

Our tours and Meetups are perfect for people of all different skill sets! If you are a beginner and need more assistance, then we are happy to help you learn and experiment with new techniques for capturing amazing images… let’s just focus on being in the field when doing it!! If you are more experienced, then let us show you all the great spots we have found and do the heaving lifting on your photography tour vacation!

If you are passionate about photography, enjoy travel, and prefer learning new techniques in the field and not in the classroom ... then we have the photography tours for you! Road Runner Photography Tours offers guided photography adventures for intermediate to advanced level photographers who wish to spend time in the field learning rather than in a classroom. Most photography tours include a significant amount of classroom instructional time. However, we believe that when you are comfortable with your camera equipment and image processing, classroom time is simply time not spent in the field shooting. We created Road Runner Photography Tours to provide an alternative for photographers that prefer to focus on fieldwork. We believe that learning through practice, with camera in hand is the best way to develop skills. Our tours are for photographers who are looking to experience new places, build friendships, find photo-companions, and develop technique. Although our tours are geared to individuals who are comfortable using their camera gear, we by no means are excluding beginners! We are happy to assist you and help you learn new techniques for capturing amazing images… let’s just focus on being in the field when doing it!! We also offer Meetups! Check us out at: http://www.meetup.com/Road-Runner-Photography-Tours/

Mission: Sharing our knowledge of photography and photography techniques with people of all levels of experience, through learning in the field.

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

Large songbird, known for their intelligence and complex social systems. They have been credited with repopulating oak trees after the last glacial period, due to their fondness of acorns.

Some interesting info: Blue Jays can also (as do starlings), mimic other birds. They primarily mimic Red-shouldered Hawks, as a warning to other Blue Jays or to run off other bird species, who think there is a hawk nearby.

The pigment in their feathers is actually melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs. The facial markings can vary widely and are believed to help birds distinguish one from another. The oldest known wild, banded, Blue Jay, as around 26 years 11 months old (banded in 1989 and found dead in 2016).

Spot Metering for high key imagery. Spot metering is used to make sure the subject is properly exposed and is most often associated with wildlife and dramatic lighting when the subject brightly lit. However, I think spot metering works in other scenarios as well, as seen in this image. This gentleman, a Babalao (priest of Santeria), was in front of a brightly light background with his adorable son shadowing his face. Instead of trying to meter for the entire scene, I metered directly on his shadowed face, allowing for the high lights to blowout behind him. I think the image works well, as he and his son are properly exposed and the distracting background has essentially disappeared.
