Update on Cinnamon Pass mudslide.

Friday, July 23 - 8 a.m. - County Road 30 (Cinnamon Pass) will remain closed today until repairs to the road can be made following two mud slides which occurred July 22. CR 30 is closed from the winter gate at the bottom of the shelf road to above Burrows Park/Grizzly Gulch trailhead. Those traveling in the backcountry today should avoid the area. Do not drive past closure signs on the road.

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected again across much of southwest Colorado today, including Lake City and northern Hinsdale County. Storms will be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall which will enhance the risk for localized flash flooding. Rainfall amounts of half an inch to one inch in a short duration will exacerbate flooding concerns in the watch area.

During the summer rainy season in Hinsdale County, back country recreationalists should be aware of weather reports and any warnings in the area. Be aware of your surroundings. Be prepared to spend the night in the back country if necessary. Never attempt to drive through or cross a flooded roadway. If you encounter a mud or rockslide on the road, get to a safe area. Make sure someone knows your travel plans for day.

Those with plans to travel the Alpine Loop today should be aware that completion of the Loop will not be possible until repairs to CR 30 are finished.

“Fly-fishing for wild trout on quiet waters must be one of the toughest and craziest ways to catch fish ever invented by man, as well as among the most frustrating and humiliating.”

Lake Fork of the Gunnison is fishing great right now with streamflows at 350 cfs and steadily dropping. Golden stoneflies, caddis and PMDs have been hatching. Large (#8-10) attractor dries have been working for us, especially in the evening. Spin fishermen are doing well with gold spoons and spinners in 1/8 ounce. Please release your catches in the Lake Fork.

We just received this very nice note from a guest who stayed in the cabin way back in 2015. The online listing sites wouldn't allow us to post it so we're posting it here.

"Hello! We stayed at your cabin 6 years ago and looking back to my shame we neglected to leave feedback for you. Do you know if there is any way to add feedback at this late date? We had a five-star stay and you all could not have been better hosts. We hope we can add that to your profile. We had a Mennonite family with us and your place was just perfect. Thanks and sorry for not leaving feedback at the time...hope we can add it now!

"We are planning another trip with the same family and were talking about our last trip and how much fun we had and that is what brought this up. I am so aggravated that I neglected to do it at the time - we had such a pleasant stay and your cabin could not have been nicer! I'm so sorry about this.... I'm glad to see you still have the bench made of old snow skis...sure brought back some great memories for me at the time and is just such a cool feature. I wish our trip would bring us back to you but we are doing the Grand Canyon area this time around. Again my apologies for neglecting to let you know at the time - your cabin will always be part of that family trip!!" --Sue K.

We are certain our guests will be very pleased with how the condo kitchen remodel turned out. Solid hickory flooring to match the cabinets, new microwave, new window seat, and a new log table with seating for ten.

North Clear Creek Falls, 5/2/21.

This is a dramatic waterfall only about 30 minutes from our rentals. In its peak spring and summer seasons it rages over the cliffside. The observation site is easy to access along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, CO149.

The attraction has picnic tables, paved parking suitable for large vehicles, restrooms, and several trails to the overlook, one handicap accessible. Interpretive signs explain the area’s history. Pets are welcome, on leash, on the trails.

“The visitor is lost in wonder at the variety and general magnificence of the scenery, the fantastic rock formations, the marvelously picturesque contour of the ranges on either side and the loveliness of the entire valley… There are pictures here well calculated to set a great landscape painter wild with desire to reproduce them on canvas.” --Frank Hall, writing about Lake City in his "History of Colorado", 1895

Colorado River Cutthroat Trout are the only salmonid native to the Lake City area. Catching one is a rare occurrence for most anglers. Please, if you do, #catchandrelease

C O L O R A D O: Colorado River Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarki pleuriticus)

Photo: Tyler Eaton (@conatives)

We wish you all Happy Holidays and a Merry 12 days of Fishmas!

The Colorado River Cutthroat historically occupied most cool water habitats of the Colorado River watersheds in Colorado, southern Wyoming, eastern Utah, extreme northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona. Currently, however, Colorado River Cutthroat trout occupy approximately 16 percent of its historic range, primarily in isolated, small headwater streams. About eight to nine percent of the occupied historic range is classified as “Conservation Populations.” The Colorado River Cutthroat has been called one of the most spectacular of the cutthroat trout and one of the most beautiful fish in North America.

Prior to recent molecular testing, larger spots and more scales above the lateral line were phenotypic traits associated with Greenback Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias) compared to CRCT (Rogers 2018). However, recent molecular investigations using contemporary and century‐old museum specimens revealed
that phenotypic differences among cutthroat trout in the Colorado River Basin correspond to three distinct genetic lineages of CRCT. These are provisionally designated the "blue lineage," native to the Yampa, Green and White River Basins; "green lineage" native to the Upper Colorado, Gunnison and Dolores basins, and the San Juan lineage, native to the San Juan basin and until recently believed to be extinct (Metcalf et al 2012; Rogers et al 2018; Bestgen et al. 2019)

Huge news!

We did it! Thanks to our community's generosity, we have exceeded our $200,000 goal on the final day of our fundraising! We are so grateful for every donation we have received.

Thanks to our supporters' generous donations and the $1.3+ million GOCO grant, The Trust for Public Land is scheduled to close on the 10.3-acre peninsula and island on December 22nd and then convey the property to Hinsdale County!

What comes next? We'll be moving to the Plan & Design phase of the project. Once acquired, community input will guide the design of a master plan for transforming the area into a world-class recreation experience.

Thanks to your help, this once in a lifetime opportunity to protect Colorado’s second-largest natural lake, the "crown jewel" of Hinsdale County, will become a reality. For more information or to contribute to the next phase of this project, please visit or email us at [email protected].

This is AWESOME👇

I have to say it was really awesome to connect with 3x Olympian and silver medalist @brianthansen to show him some local ice. It’s always a crapshoot to invite someone here for lake skating as a trace of snow can ruin it. The stars aligned and he was able to skate on my favorite lake. I think he’ll be back.

There’s a movement underway to purchase the Lake peninsula and island and convert it to a public park. DeLoach Vacation Rentals is proud to have made a donation. Click on the link to learn more about this opportunity. Time is short. Privately owned for over a century, the island and peninsula at Lake San Cristobal are now for sale and can be acquired for public use with your help.

For the more advanced stargazers, you’re in the most remote place in the lower 48, you have unparalleled access to darkness. Favorite winter viewing locations are Lake San Cristobal’s frozen surface and Windy Point Overlook off of Slumgullion Pass.

Just a few blocks from historic downtown, Lake City’s Ice Park, open from December to March, weather permitting, offers ice climbers up to 15 routes with 60 to 100 degree pitches with mixed grades WI 3 to 5. Climbs are free. Keep an eye on conditions at Join in the annual Ice Climbing Festival each February, and many workshops and guided trips held throughout the season. For the more experienced, climbing the frozen waterfalls at Sherman or North Clear Creek Falls is exceptional.

The Lake City Ski Hill features a 1000-foot Poma platter lift - the oldest operating lift in Colorado - that carries you 247 vertical feet to the top of 7 runs of varying difficulty and a fun terrain park to practice jumps, tricks and more. Nestled at the foot of the San Juan Mountains at 8,661 ft. in elevation, you will discover the Mountaineer Theatre, the only movie theatre in a 90 mile radius of the area. Cross country ski and snowshoe opportunities include in-town, from the edges of town, and backcountry treks. Most hiking trails are winter sport adaptable, and the 100+ mile trail network groomed by the snowmobile club provides guaranteed multi-use trails and amazing access to the Continental Divide, the Alpine Plateau and the mountains of Slumgullion Pass.

The 100 miles of multi-use groomed trails that wind around and down from the Continental Divide are ideal for Fat Biking. With wide, smooth trails, fat bikers can cruise along the trails while the peaks of the surrounding San Juan mountain range surround carve a rugged line along the vista. This area offers the very best views of Uncompahgre, Wetterhorn, and Matterhorn Peaks.

Lake San Cristobal is a magical place to skate, and the locals are usually able to keep a nice area shoveled at the boat dock. The Town of Lake City also maintains an ice skating rink in back of the Armory near the intersection of Bluff and 3rd streets. Keep an eye on the events calendar for the annual pond hockey tournament!

Lake San Cristobal usually freezes over in late December and provides fun and abundant ice fishing until it thaws, usually in late April. There’s a popular and competitive ice fishing derby each February. Fishing with bait and jigging are successful methods. For a more adventurous experience snow-shoe up to Water Dog Reservoir where locals believe a state record Brook trout will make carrying the auger 4 miles very worthwhile.
