Rensselaer Friends of the Half Moon

Published in the North Holland Daily newspaper.

In exactly a week, VOC museum ship Halve Maen will finally disappear from Hoorn. "It's a shame," says Eduard van Breen on behalf of the American Foundation New Netherlands Museum, which owns the ship. He will never understand why a majority in Hoorn’s politics has settled the Half Maen on the resounding coin that cost the project and put aside the 'publicity value'.

Although the Half Moon wrote black figures in the last five years that Hoorn had written the ship on loan, there were shortages before. "But for Hoorn, they were a drop on a plate, which was hot because of all the success that was made," says Van Breen.

He refers, among other things, to the glorious entry in Hoorn, the participation in Sail 2015, the tour of the six VOC cities in the Netherlands, the visits to numerous port places and the role at events. “The Half Moon was, everywhere she went, a pointer to Hoorn. You couldn't have bought that pr."

He points out that a media agency at the time calculated that the publicity value of the Halve Maen - the estimate of what it would cost to buy the ship's reputation for Hoorn through advertising and the like - had already been 264,000 euros in the first three days and it was. In three days! And we've been here five years...''

The only sailing replica of a seventeenth-century VOC yacht was built in 1989 on the initiative of the American Andrew Hendricks, descendant of the Dutch. He is still active as a patron and sees the Halve Maen as a tool to underline the Dutch contribution to the origins of America. Finally, this was the ship on which Henry Hudson explored America, leading to the first settlements on the spot where New York is now.

The Halve Maen is not only a symbol of shared heritage, but is also there to stimulate new Dutch-American cultural initiatives.
The replica was owned immediately after its construction by the New Netherlands Museum, a not-for-profit foundation. It stings Van Breen that it has been suggested that 'those Americans' would have money left over, 'while the board personally contributed as a minister and the foundation has also put a lot of money into it, in addition to the amount that was contracted paid for things like maintenance and certification'.

Director Ad Geerdink of the Westfries Museum, who managed the Halve Maen, can confirm this. “Andrew and Eduard really deserve credit for five years Half Maen in Hoorn. They have supported it financially for five years and thought along on all fronts. Hoorn paid 47,000 euros in loan compensation, but it was invested in maintenance as agreed, in order to allow the ship to sail”

Eduard van Breen in turn praises Geerdink, alongside skipper Bram Nijenhuis and project coordinator Annemarie Pothaar and the small hundred volunteers. “We are more than delighted with the result they have been able to achieve. The Half Maen arrived as a ship full of stories and a beautiful chapter has now been credited by Hoorn”

The story continues. The Halve Maen will say goodbye with cannon-mounted cannon bell on Saturday at 10 o'clock in the Hoornse havenkom with cannon roar and set course for new destinations. Delfshaven and Sail Amsterdam were already known. Before that, in April, the Halve Maen will be in Volendam for some time, says Eduard van Breen. He is very happy that Nijenhuis is willing to remain skipper. "We hope that other crew members and volunteers will also want to participate again, in addition to people who are new to leave."
Where the journey after Sail goes is not yet known. In any case, the certificate required to sail until 2021 applies. The owner does not rule out the fact that the ship will then be placed in a fixed place, such as the Batavia.

The Half Maen continues to follow via halvemaen.nl where a web store also comes. For souvenirs of a ship, which in Hoorn will not be forgotten soon.
