That first sight of the Ka'bah is an unforgettable, deeply moving moment that every single pilgrim describes as "life changing."

Makkah in the time of the Prophet (s) was the Ka'bah with some space and homes around it. With no walls or doors, people's backyard literally was the Ka'bah, but no doubt this simple structure even affected the non muslims well before the advent of the Prophet (s)'s message.

It is said at first glimpse of the Ka'bah one should make lots of dua.

The Garden Ar Rawdah:

If you had one place you know you had tranquility and absolute peace on earth, what location would you pick?

The Rawdah, the Garden between the home of the Prophet (saw) and his minbar, a garden from the gardens of paradise. The sense of tranquility one feels as one prays and supplicates there is indescribable and out of this world.

But one highlight that we may miss out in this special place, that the Prophet (saw) described what is between his home and his pulpit as being a garden from the gardens of Paradise. He amazingly described it this way to not only help us focus on the aspect of worship there, but also on a more deeper meaning. He alluded that between one's home - the private sphere - and the pulpit - the public sphere - if one keeps their purpose in mind between these areas, it is as if they are living and fulfilling their place in a garden from the gardens of paradise.

Trust in God:

Hajar, the wife of Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) was left in the desert with no food or water, with her young child Ismaeel.

When she saw that Ibrahim had been ordered by Allah to leave them there, she said to him beautiful words of tawwakul (reliance on God):

“Then certainly, He will not abandon us!”

She climbed up to Mount Safa and looked as far as the eye could see, trying to get a glimpse of a source of water or a person who could help them. After she didn’t see anything, she descended and made her way to Mount Marwa. She completed this journey seven times until she saw an angel digging in the sand with his wing – and that was the beginning of the well of zamzam.

So she drank and nursed her son. The angel then said to her, ‘Do not fear abandonment, for a House for Allah (the Kaa'bah) will be built in this area by this boy and his father, and most certainly, Allah does not abandon His people.’ (Al-Bukhari)

To this day, the sa’ee between Safa and Marwa is performed by the millions of pilgrims who visit Makkah every year, and they still drink from the well of zamzam.

All of this is in remembrance of one woman’s bravery and her trust in God, Who provided for her and took care of her, just as He continuously provides and takes care of the believers.

The Only Companion that is still alive in our time:

Some scholars mentioned that this companion is in fact... the Mountain of Uhud.

Why?

The Prophet (saw) one day was out on Uhud with Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman (ra) and the mountain shook. The Prophet (saw) spoke to the mountain and said "Stand firm Uhud. There is on you a prophet, a truthful and two martyrs." So the scholars derived from this that since the Prophet (saw) talked to Uhud, it is a companion.

The Prophet (saw) went so much to say as Uhud is a mountain from paradise, and that Uhud loves the believers and the believers love it.

Uhud even will come on our scale of deeds! How so?
The Prophet (s) mentioned that whoever prays the funeral prayer gets a 'Qirat' in reward on their scale of deeds, and whoever prays and follows the funeral procession is rewarded with two 'Qirats.' He (s) then explained that one Qirat is in fact a mountain of Uhud size in reward!

The mountain of Uhud is a place that not only symbolizes a mountainous size of reward, but also symbolizes the firmness of faith of the companions that lived in the city in its shadows. It symbolized also the mountains of faith that stood by the Prophet (s) and carried the message of Islam and represented an immovable belief in their Lord and His messenger.

This, is why Uhud loves the believers, and the believers love it.

The Ripple Effect

Imagine a perfectly calm pond on a serene, windless day. If you dip your finger into the water, the water will begin to ripple around the centre, the circles growing and spreading out until your eyes lose sight of the furthest ripple that will only end when it reaches the edge of the water.

Just as those ripples had a centre, our centre on this earth is the Sacred House of Allah. People all around the world face it each day to offer prayer and thanks to their Creator. The ripples begin at this centre and spread to touch all parts of the world, beyond what most eyes of men have seen.

When one performs tawaf (circumambulation) around the ka’bah, he or she is affirming that Allah is the centre of their existence. Their only true purpose is to serve Him, please Him, worship Him.

Madinah:

Anas (r) said, "I swear by Allah I have never seen a day more filled with light, nor more happy than the day the Prophet (saw) and Abu Bakr (r) entered Madinah..."

Madinah. The City of Light. The City of Hijrah and Sunnah. The City of Scholars.. and most importantly, the City of the Prophet (saw).

Every single person that comes to Madinah shares with the Prophet (saw) something that goes beyond just faith. They breath the same air he breathed, they experience the same environment and weather, and the same air that touched his blessed skin. They share now in the fact they experienced living in his city.

This feeling only increases them in their calling, their love, and helps in fulfilling the purpose of the journey they left their homelands and love ones to achieve: the worship of the Almighty, by following in the footsteps of Allah's most loved servant, Muhammad the final messenger (saw).

Taking time out when one visits this blessed city to truly appreciate this fact through reminding themselves that Allah chose them for that, is what helps captivate the essence of this city, The City, Madinah.

The Prophet's (saw) Mosque:

The Prophet's Masjid is a site that is filled not only with history, but stories of faith, and incredible events of righteousness and sincerity.

The companion Abu Talhah (r), a very wealthy Madinan trader and land owner, owned a date farm consisting of 3 wells and 300 date palm trees.

He told himself, there is nothing more that I love more than money - so he went on to donate that entire farm of 300 date palm trees and what was in it, for Allah and His Messenger.

How did Allah repay that kind of sincerity?

By making that donated land into what would be added in the expansion of the Prophet's Masjid and increase and multiply his reward for every single person that prays in it.

They were men that were truthful with Allah, so Allah was truthful with them. This masjid represents that concept of multiplication of reward. One thousand prayers more than anywhere else except Masjid Al Haram, the garden of Paradise where dua is accepted, but more importantly, that true sincerity that shows that Allah preserves truthfulness and multiplies it in ways that no one can imagine.

Did Abu Talhah (r) ever think his land of charity would be eventually included in the masjid? Did he ever think it would become even part of the masjid? We don't know. But we do know that he did sincerely for the sake of His creator, and His creator repaid him in a way he would have never imagined. This is what the Prophet's Masjid is ALL about..
