Go Cleveland, it's your birthday
Looking great for 223 years old!
We are optimistic this will again be the standard protocol.
When Norfolk Southern Corp. speaks, people listen...
Jordan Vandenberge's WEWS-TV piece from yesterday provides a more factual summary, (https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/norfolk-southern-to-keep-iron-curtain-lift-bridge-in-raised-position-by-default) but it is noticeable when train journalists see the dialogue on the Iron Curtain being newsworthy.
While the "bridge up" policy change may not become the official standard, it provides a sea-change of difference when it comes to the daily operations of Cleveland's tourism-related businesses that transit the Cuyahoga River during the busiest time of their seasonal business cycle.
We'd like to give three quick shout-outs:
- The substantive dialogue and discussions on NS1 is a direct outcome of the relationships forged through the Cuyahoga River Safety Task Force. Thanks to those stakeholders.
- Local journalists and news outlets with a keen ear for a story that needs to be told were essential for providing a needed focus and visibility on the pain Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie tourism related businesses were feeling. We're giving a deserved horn-blow to Jordan, WEWS and The E.W. Scripps Company ownership. Thanks also to WKYC Channel 3 - Cleveland.
- Kudos to Norfolk Southern for coming to the table, being open to stakeholder feedback, and in head-spinning fashion, enacting changes that will have an immediate impact on tourism-related business during the busiest part of their season.
See you on the Cuyahoga River later today and for tonight's Parade of Lights!

We're certainly happy this issue is getting attention and getting solved. Great coverage by News 5 Cleveland!
As we enjoyed a meal at Shooters on the Water on the edge of the Cuyahoga River last night, we appreciated how different the river looked and acted from earlier in the week.
As many know, News 5 Cleveland's Jordan Vandenberge ran a Wednesday night story detailing how local (and seasonal) tourism businesses like Great Lakes Water Sports, the Nautica Queen Cruise Dining Ship, and the GOODTIME III have been impacted by the lift schedule of the Norfolk Southern Corp Bridge known as the "Iron Curtain".
Fast forward to last night where NS1 was open (yes, for the incoming Sam Laud transit), closed for a passing train, then reopened. Recreational boater traffic along the Flats East Bank was noticeably up. And three H2O law enforcement boats were on the scene helping keep the flow going in a safe fashion. It was a great look for Cleveland's waterfront in the same week the MLB All-Star Game placed Cleveland in the national limelight.
We're greatly encouraged that national and local business interests can be satisfied by a sustainable, cooperative solution that meets the needs of Cuyahoga River stakeholders. Have a great weekend enjoying Cleveland's waterfront everybody!

mlive.com The South Pier Light Navigational Beacon, which has stood in some form near the entrance to Manitowoc Harbor in Wisconsin for more than 164 years, fell into Lake Michigan around 8:30 a.m. after its 20-foot-tall fiberglass tower was hit by waves and strong winds, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
1,000 Passenger Vessel offering Public Narrated Tours by day and Entertainment Cruises and Private Charters in the evenings. Since 1958 GOODTIME Cruises and Tours have been educating and entertaining young and old visitors and residents alike on the Cuyahoga River and Cleveland’s Lakefront right from East Ninth Street Pier and North Coast Harbor. Two Hour Narrated Tours are refreshing and informative, with a unique perspective of the City and the many bridges that connect its East and West Side. Cleveland, once known as the “City of Bridges” was a power-house during the Industrial Revolution also was home to many of the Headquarters of the Fortune 500 Companies. The history of the Cuyahoga River took many turns over the years, just as the River itself has many turns... The word; Cuyahoga means “Crooked” and was named so by the Iroquoian-speaking North American Indians called Eriez or Erie People. The 2-hour tours are offered Tuesday - Sunday during the summer sailing season. Shining a light on Cleveland and the key areas of distinction that have made our country great. You will find a new appreciation for the reversal of years of Pollution that once made international news (June 22, 1969) and brought about the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 and the Clean Water Act in 1972. There are many significant facts you will learn about Cleveland and the People who started their companies along the river banks.
Come cruise with us - a 3rd generation family-owned and operated business in the best location in the nation - Cleveland is more than a Destination... its a good time!!!
