With temps expected to dip to 25 year record lows, here are some tips for staying warm.

Caffeine and alcohol are not your friends. That cup of coffee that starts many of our days and provides us with a jolt of energy is also a vasoconstrictor, inhibiting our circulation. That hot toddy, it's a vasodialator, facilitating heat loss through the skin surface. Not saying to avoid them altogether, but be mindful.

Loose, multiple layers are your friends. When you venture outside, avoid cotton anything. Choose wool or synthetic options and make sure the outermost layer is also wind proof. Don't make the mistake of jamming three pairs of socks into a boot that only accommodates one. Your circulation will be restricted and you'll most certainly get cold feet, find and wear a wool sock, not cotton. Mittens will typically be warmer than gloves. And wear a hat!

This is a great time for hearty soups stews. Think nutrient AND calorie dense foods that will provide your body the fuel it needs to keep warm.

Drink water and keep moving. You'll be fine.

For example, when we informed her that the coffee maker was not working, she made sure we had a fully functioning one in just a few short hours. The house itself is lovely -- solid, attractive and clean, with great street appeal The appliances are new, the furniture comfortable and in good repair. (If I were a realtor, this would be a dream house to sell.) The street is quiet and tree-lined, and provides easy access to all locations in the eastern suburbs as well as the city.
