A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tours

Hi, grew up in Bensonhurst, love this idea. Why don’t you include Davinci Pizza in tour... they are a bensonhurst staple and another wonderful example of Sicilian Pizza made for 50 plus years from a wonderful family I had the pleasure of knowing them from many years of shopping on 18th Ave?
What a trip! Perfect way to tell 2021 to f*** off! You’re not ruining our fun! Ok, so they may not be in order but these are a sample of pictures from this epic adventure! Max Brenner was as good as I remember it! We enjoyed a delicious pasta chicken Alfredo, house waffle fries, white chocolate green tea latte (OMG) and finished with the Max French Toast. We headed back to Broadway to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child from the 2nd row! Holy crap, was that an amazing show! The 3+ hours flew by and I was completely captivated. Guess I need to watch the movies now! 😳 The next morning, we went to Applejack Diner, a place Jon and I frequented on a previous trip years ago. It was as good as we remember and gave us that traditional diner feel we were going for. And I got my bacon, egg, and cheese on a NY bagel! Then, we took an amazing tour with A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tours with the founder, Tony (of course his name was Tony)! Get this, he used to be a respiratory therapist and after a few decades in that incredibly rewarding career, he knew he had something more to give and decided to give the tour industry a try. Growing up in Brooklyn NYC, he was best poised to give us genuine and authentic stories of this unique burrough. Our tour included two stops for his favorite pizza places…one was Grimaldi's Pizza for delicious Neapolitan (round) margarita pizza, then a stop for Sicilian style (square) pizza at L&B Spumoni Gardens. We got to stop and walk around at Coney Island which was super cool! We got to see where the scene from Goodfellas was filmed where Joe Pesci was whacked and some other scenes from well known movies and shows. And, obviously saw the Brooklyn Bridge! I would totally recommend this tour and will be sure to catch his other tours when we come back. We then ventured back to Broadway to see Dear Evan Hansen and good grief, what a powerful show! We saw it in Orlando but seeing it here and this close (2nd row) was beyond words!! The emotions and tears from the cast, especially Zach Piser, took my breath away. I wanted to jump on stage and hug him! Thursday morning we headed to breakfast at Zucker's Bagels & Smoked Fish then ice cream at Big Gay Ice Cream. What a fun place with delicious confections! We then strolled around Central Park, Manhattan, New York Cityand worked off all of the calories up to this point (right?). Believe it or not, we made it to our matinee of The Play That Goes Wrong, which was hysterical! Jon and I saw it in Orlando but the girls really wanted to see it here and it was even funnier than I remember it! We all laughed so hard! We had a little extra time so we hit up Ellens Stardust Diner for dinner. Such an entertaining experience! Our server even sang the girls’ song request from Wicked! Such talent at this place! We wrapped up the night with To Kill A Mockingbird At the Shubert Theatre, starring THE Jeff Daniels. You guys, I have never felt so moved and transported into a show as I did with this one. The entire cast was phenomenal and I was definitely starstruck seeing Jeff Daniels (especially considering I watched The Martian on the plane to NY!!) H picked this show and I am so glad she did! Friday was our “free day” but we did not waste a minute. We grabbed Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for breakfast (H & A’s first KK doughnuts!!), hit up the M&M'S Store Times Square, then grabbed the subway down to find Joey Rose’s hard eight from the comedian Joe DeRosa, who does the hysterical Tastebuds podcast with Sal Vulcano! We even took pictures sitting in the seats they sit in to film their show! The sandwiches are to die for! And the staff was so freaking nice! We stalled a little in the hopes to catch Joe but no luck. We walked over through Chinatown to get to Little Italy where we grabbed cannolis from Ferrara Bakery & Cafe and since we are equal opportunity cannoli eaters, we grabbed a couple from Cannoli King. We headed out to the World Trade Center 9/11 Memorial Site, New York City. A was tired so we dropped her off at the room and Jon, H and I trekked to find the only remaining Dylan's Candy Bar, which turned out to be in the most gorgeous mall The Shops At Hudson Yards and saw The Vessel all lit up for Christmas. What a site! Finally we headed back to our hotel, stopped off at the same pizza place we went for NYE 2016, Patzeria Perfect Pizza, grabbed the best white pie you can imagine and headed up to the room to rest up for the ball drop. Around 11:40p, we bopped downstairs to the same place we stood last time we were here and had the most perfect view of the ball on 46th street with probably 30 other people! We could hear the shouting and celebrating of Times Square, New York City but did not have to be jammed in there. As soon as the ball dropped, we headed back to our room, catching the vision of the confetti showering down on Broadway. Bed by 12:30a! This morning, we wrapped up the trip with breakfast at Junior's Restaurant & Cheesecake, finished off our cannolis and headed to the airport!

Happy 100th Birthday to Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park! The classic 3-row carousel, with 48 carved horses and two chariots, was created in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Originally installed in Idora Park in Youngstown, OH, it was bought at auction by Brooklynites Jane and David Walentas when the park closed in 1984. Over many years, Jane had it completely refurbished; and her husband David, who developed the neighborhood we now call DUMBO, gave it a home in Brooklyn Bridge Park in 2011. Today's birthday celebration includes free rides until 6pm! :)

#ThrowbackThursday Back in 2016, Brooklynite and Food Network star Sunny Anderson asked me to help put together a food tour for a group of travel journalists she was hosting. She wanted to incorporate four great Brooklyn food stops on the tour; Talde, Tanoreen, Little Cupcake Bakeshop and Di Fara Pizza, and that’s exactly what we did. Take a look at all the great food they experienced that day! 🙂

#TuesdayTrivia Frederick Law Olmsted was an American landscape architect; and though he was born in Hartford, CT on this day in 1822, he has a strong connection to Brooklyn. Together with his partner, Calvert Vaux, they designed Central Park in Manhattan (1858) and then Prospect Park in Brooklyn (1867). They admitted afterwards that they considered Prospect Park their masterpiece as they were able to correct what they considered their mistakes with Central Park.

Myron Waldman was born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn on this day in 1908. As a child, he entertained himself by drawing. Before graduating from New Utrecht High School, he already had a job as an animator for Mutt & Jeff cartoons. In 1930, he was hired by Fleischer Studios where he drew some of the most beloved cartoon characters of our time like Betty Boop, Popeye, Gulliver's Travels. Superman, Casper the Friendly Ghost and others. Like me, I'm sure many of you grew up with those cartoons. Waldman passed away in 2006 at 97.
