Pursuit Driven Guiding

Pursuit Driven Guiding has a singular goal:Providing top quality hunts for each and every client that puts there trust in our service.100% Effort Guarantee

Ive been in Africa and have admittedly neglected my social media responsibilities...i apologize guys! Heres a look at a few of this past winter and springs hunting success'...it was a great year with opportunity given to each client on rams meeting or exceeding my standards of maturity and trophy class. I sent one guy home without a ram due to some unforseen issues...since this was on me and PDG... hes due back at no charge next season to give me an opportunity to make good. And i will.

I hope everyones summer is off to a great start and i sincerely hope to hear from any of you wishing to book any of the hunts i guide or outfit. This coming year ill have some new exciting offerings in west Texas: Depradation helicopter hunting for predators on over 300,000 acres as well as fully guided predator hunts for coyote, bobcat, mnt lion, and grey fox on the ground with calls and fox pro. It should be an exciting year! Ill have details soon...

In the meantime im nearly booked for my 2019/2020 Auodad hunts...just a very few openings left in dec, march and april. Ill be in and out of communication for most of the summer but you can reach me here or leave a message via 432 294 4002. Starting in August ill be back in Alaska guiding my usual long fall seasons. Thanks guys and sorry for the absence....

Thanks for coming out guys! Was a great hunt. Found four opportunities on big rams over 10yrs old in four days...and were able to seal it on these two beautiful 31" rams. Well done guys thanks again for putting your trust in PDG. Congrats...that was fun

A little over a week ago PDG kicked off the year with a great old ram and another happy hunter. Thanks for coming out Chad Martin! What a neat ancient old heavily broomed ram! This is the kind of trophy that illustrates clearly why age is everything to me when searching for a trophy for my clients. (And it should explain clearly why i answer the "do you guys average 30" ? " question with my default answer of "sure...but more importantly we average over 10 yrs old")

Lots of young rams hit 30...but theyll NEVER look like this ram unless theyve been on the mountain long enough to carry the story of those years on there horns or the breeding scars on there cape. Testament to the role theyve played for the species as a mature adult.

This ram hit that mark years ago...then lost 3-5 " of horn to brooming and still hits that mark on his long side. His tips are nearly the circumference of my wrist. A beautiful trophy!

Had some clients switch there dates around so its been a very relaxed beginning to my West Texas season...killed a couple solid 10 yr old 30" sheep right out of the gate and have had time to do some scouting and put glass on a pile of rams....i also was fortunate to aquire another 10,000 acre property to hunt that is literally crawling with sheep...im excited to add to our country and offer more to PDG clients!

R and R time is officially over for me tho and frankly im glad!....after Christmas ill happily kick off the new year with about 100 days of nearly nonstop desert guiding that will conclude about the time the bears start digging out and walking again up in Alaska...my annual cue to trade my snake gators in for raingear, grab the .416, say my farewell to the sun... and head north.

Heres a bunch of rams that are still walking...and a couple that arent...so far so good. Looking forward to an amazing 2019!

******Im off to Alaska soon for a pong guiding season... and would love all these hunts sold before i leave! ...Im gonna round it to the end of the month folks... $1000 off my 5 day mnt hunt if you book by Aug 1. Just 3 spots left on my 5 day hunts and a few 3 day openings avail on my gentle hunt. **********************************

Spring and its bears have come and gone...summer is here and AK sheep moose and more bear are just right around the corner for me now. And of course, followed immediately after with a full winter chasing Auodad after im done with my AK grind in mid nov.

It was a stellar spring! Heres a few diff pics of the results of both hunts Was able to help the two clients i hunted with kill the bear we all dream about, two perfect furred 10'+ boss boars. It was great fun! ... tho of course the season had its mental checks and weather obstacles as all seasons do in the coastal north, but the clients did there jobs very well when asked, and the efforts from both roles and good attitude and focus paid off. It was my kind of spring. Both bears were guided by me for 2 different outfits: Nushagak Guides and R&R guide service. Both have a great reputation for consistent successfull big bear hunting.
...dall sheep up next in August.
Hoping the stars stay lined up and i can carry this momentum through the long hunting year ahead!

Just finished a Dall sheep hunt for Alaska Summit Outfitters...had a father son duo from Colorado that came very prepared to hunt hard and do there job...the results were good with two mature rams off the mountain and in the salt by day 6. Jim killed his 9 yr old ram opening morning after we spent the entire day prior climbing into position to intercept a ram I'd found from the valley floor a few miles upstream before season opened. It worked out perfectly and Jim made a 250 yrd shot to collect his lifelong dream...a Dall ram from big Alaska mnts.
Four days later found us hunting again and hiking into a bowl to hunt a distant drainage for ram number two. I stopped midway and hiked to a spot I had some food stashed to resubbly our rations before punching into my intended route up the drainage. During this time I found a solid ram close to us...and in a spot I hadn't paid much attention to in my haste to travel..and this ram was visible, and was immediately on the hitlist after a quick glance with my tube...keeper ram. We pitched camp and got up the next morning with a plan and prize to collect. It took us most the day climbing to get into position. Mike put a solid shot through his dark horned 10 yr old rams chest to wrap up a well earned very successful sheep hunt with a couple great hardworking guys...my fall is off to a good start and with some momentum. Brown bear next. I fly to camp tommorow.

Just back from a few weeks hunting along the Luangwa River in Zambia. Shown are some of the trophies taken in the course of 2 safaris. Highlight of a month in wild Africa was a very successful hunt with Ross Spagrud and his son Eric ...the Buffalo/Aquatics Safari celebrated Eric's graduation and was a gift from his father Ross: a guy I've grown to be close friends with in our hunting over the past year in Alaska, Zambia, and far west tx. In the coming 12 months im happily looking forward to guiding and hunting with Ross quite a bit more, in all three destinations, and for some of the world's most sought trophies...Brown bear, Barbary Sheep, Leopard and Cape Buffalo will be the primary goals.

Hunting many times bonds those who share it in some way...simple as that. Sometimes quite profoundly, creating friendships that last lifetimes. Guiding has introduced me to a wide array of people over the years, and taught me a lot about men...it has also given me an undeserved number of close friends, in both clients and fellow pros.
Hunting full time and living the lifestyle it demands is to accept alot of stress, inconvenience and hardships easily avoided in other occupations...hunting full time is often not the basket of peaches many imagine it to be....but for some of us it's the only way forward...as any other route would lead to restless regret or worse:rediculous nonsense like off seasons (😳!?!?)

While the game itself and the animals that provide it offer the stimulus... there's more to the magic than the hunting.
Time spent out there with guys like Ross: sharing the passion, and drama that pursuit lends its players....and doing it in the wild places that certain hunting takes us...is, for me, what turns the job into an obsession that grows with each season.

While its summer time in the states and the hunting opportunities are slow... its winter in Africa and the safari season is in full swing. Ive taken these last 3 months to learn my trade overseas assisting Stone Hunting Safaris on multiple classic hunts in both Zambia and Tanzania. Check out www.stonehuntingsafaris.com or contact me if your interested in joining me in Zambia next year for a safari in one of the most amazing big game hunting grounds left in Africa: the Luangua Valley

Pursuit Driven Guiding

2015 Sheep season is under way. Cruising right along this year so far with 100% opportunity on mature rams from 9-13 yrs old. The Chinatis are healthy and have recovered well from the recent few years of drought. The rams are there in numbers so far and while i did not witness much of any strong rutting activity in oct and early nov...the big boys are in full swing right now and hanging with the large herds of ewes. Start another hunt day after tommorow. I have high hopes...

My 2015 Alaska summer/fall season guiding for Renfros Alaskan Adventures has come to a close finally. It was an outstanding season, and i was very fortunate to send all but 1 of my clients home with the trophies and experiences they came for. I would like to thank all of them for showing up and putting there faith, time, and money, with Renfros and myself to produce a quality Alaskan experience. Heres a small pictorial of the seasons highlights.

Now I return to the desert southwest and very soon begin a 5 month season chasing free range Auodad for my Pursuit Driven clients as well as doin some hunts for Desert Safaris. I cant wait to get started....

Photos from Pursuit Driven Guiding's post

Been hunting in the desert pretty near nonstop since i flew south from last season in Ak. Started Nov 1rst of 14. Got a couple hunts left before i return to Alaska and another 5 months guiding up north...immersed in the place that holds my heart.
Heres a look at what this winter and early spring produced for my clients and i, and those that i guided under Desert Safaris. Its been an outstanding way to spend my time and feed my drive...

Pursuit Driven Guiding

On the 2nd day of a 10 day hunt in the Chinatis for PDG. 2 ram hunt with a client that has hunted with me yearly in Alaska since 2009. Shane and i have taken 5 Brown/Grizzly Bear over 9', a 66 " bull moose, and accompanied his oldest boy to a great nunivak reindeer bull in Alaska...now it appears he brought his good attitude and great fortune with him for his hunt with me in the Chinatis. One of the better rams of the season, and def the oldest. I spotted him at daybreak and waited him out most of the day with no approach...by 4 oclock he got up and fed to a spot on the hill i could work with away from the sharp eyes of dozens of sheep on the rim...Shane made a fantastic shot at 350 yrds and took this BRUISER. I judged him before the stalk at 30 or 31 on his long and over 13 at his head. Figured him at high 140s or low 150s and over 10 yrs old. He didnt dissapoint! Hes heavily broomed, between 12 and 13 yrs old, 31 long, 29 short, and 13.5 bases. Huge bodied and arthritic in his movements...he is truly an Old Man Ram. It was a great day up with the sheep with a client ive hunted with for a very long time.

Stay tuned...we got another 10+ yr old Chinati hammer to kill...and 8 days to find him. :)

PDG continues to produce! 100% opportunity with high 90's success on mostly 10+yr old rams....and glassing MANY outstanding 6-8 yr old up and comers for the future. The property is everything id ever hoped and more. A Ram FACTORY!
Its been an outstanding winter but not quite done yet.
im able to glass up old rams i havent seen EVERY time i hunt it. With continued efforts to harvest strictly 10+ yr olds and its location near large spreads of completely unpressured very rough habitat...i look for similiar results in years to come. This place blows me away ecery time i put boots and glass on it. A sheep hunt in every sense...no roads...no fences...just ROCKS and RAMS.

PDG IS NOW BOOKING WINTER 2015/16. FOR THE MONTHS OF NOV DEC MARCH AND 1 5DAY HUNT IN JAN.

offering a substantial discoubt for bookings with deposits sent by May 1st. Contact me ( Zack Shrum) here for details or call and leave a message at 432 294 4002. If i dont answer im hunting. Will return calls asap. I have 5 spots out of 8 still avail....i dont expect em to last. Lets go sheep hunting!

Hunt South West Alaskan Brown Bear with Cabela's Outdoor Adventures

Bears on my mind lately...spring looms near! Got a few more sheep hunts to finish in the desert and then ill be headed back north. Spring brown bear hunting might be my favorite thing to do in this life....heres a clip of a hunt with Marc Nelsen that Cabelas filmed the Outdoor Channel 3 springs ago.

Hunt the pristine Alaskan Wilderness in the far southwest part of the state for trophy Brown Bear. This outfitter encompasses more than 15 thousand square mi...

Been pretty busy since i last updated this page.....lately ive been splitting time between my own hunts for Pursuit Driven and guiding additional sheep hunts for Desert Safaris in the Davis mnts and Bend country of presidio county. Considerable hunting effort: HAS PRODUCED VERY WELL!
Ive managed to successfully produce opportunity at mature auodad rams 100% of the time with high 90's success on rams over 30" with numerous 10+ yr old rams between 31-34"

I have a couple days break and then back at it with the rams until the end of march, its wonderfull life! :)

....heres a look at Pursuit Driven Guiding's 1st official winter season so far: and a few i guided for the Desert Safaris camp as well.

Booking for the remainder of 2015 (just a few avail spots left) and 2016 now...dates avail in the months of nov. dec. and march.
