Sex on the River

One of the most interesting finds in researching the tour "Sex and the Old Town" were the floating bordellos on the Potomac River. After the Civil War and until the 1960's boats called Potomac Arks lined the river; the girls were called Ark Girls. In 1927 with the planning for the GW Parkway, many of the boats were removed, but others remained until 1960 when they were finally outlawed and burned or turned into other uses.
