#ScienceSaturday - At the center of this photo are small, curvy dunes near the Medano Creek bed. These are called 'barchan' dunes, many of which have joined together to form barchanoid ridges.

Most geological dunes terms are Arabic in origin because sand is a major part of the Middle Eastern landscape. 'Barchan' means 'horns'. These dunes form on a flat surface with little or no vegetation to hold back their arms, so the smaller curved arms (horns) of a barchan dune migrate ahead of the taller mid-section, forming a crescent shape. Learn more about barchan and other dunes on our Dune Types web page:

He continued, “Everyone was raving about them, and we're thrilled to have them back for this special Holiday show. We're also extremely grateful to Alamosa State Bank for helping sponsor this event.” ASB President, Russell Achatz, said “What Society Hall does for Alamosa and the surrounding community continues to be amazing.
