We are home to Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia and one of the longest running professional theatres in the nation. This live theatre produces between 17-19 shows per year on two unique stages. Visitors to Abingdon can find creativity on display in many forms including visual, performing, traditional and theatrical arts. The historic downtown area is a great place to do some retail therapy; you can enjoy a farm-to-table meal at one of our great locally owned restaurants or try a tasting at the Abingdon Winery or Wolf Hills Brewing Company. If you are an outdoor enthusiasts then consider the Virginia Creeper Trail for a lovely bike ride or scenic hike. Take in the arts, culture and history at one of our many museums and galleries throughout the town, all while enjoying our cozy accommodations at one of our hotels, bed and breakfasts and cottages. With such a rich history, Abingdon is full of beautiful architecture. The "Hassinger House" was built in 1906 and until recently functioned as the Abingdon Visitor Center. Riders of The Virginia Creeper Trail owe a special thank you to the Hassinger family...their timber and sawmill company in Konnarock, VA is the reason the Virginia Creeper rail line was constructed.

It's always playtime in Abingdon! Sometimes the play takes place on the stage at the famous Barter Theatre, where Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine and other entertainment giants have performed.
Other times, visitors enjoy playing in the great outdoors. Abingdon is surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, which forms a massive wilderness playground complete with rivers, lakes and trails. The Appalachian Trail is nearby and the Virginia Creeper Trail begins with mile marker zero in downtown Abingdon. Bike shops and shuttle services can get you on the trails quickly and easily.
If your idea of play time includes shopping, nightlife or live music, fun is always on tap. Main Street and the historic downtown district are filled with great restaurants and unique shops and galleries. A craft beer brewery and winery are nearby. Don’t miss Heartwood – Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway where you’ll find crafts, gifts, local food and live music.
Lovers of arts and crafts will want to visit William King Museum of Art, the Arts Depot, Holston Mountain Artisans, and numerous downtown galleries and shops.
