The Creeper Trail needs to reopen and we need to move on people needs the outdoors!!
This is an award winning short film about a rescue horse right here in SouthWest Virginia: I truly believe Abingdon can become as prominent, if not more prominent, than Atlanta in the film industry! So I'm trying hard to make that happen- there is so much marvelous potential here! -
Today, Miss Saye Yabandeh and Dr. Matthew Hubbard of Abingdon Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy discuss the state of the community during COVID19 and what masks to use and when. So, we are planning to leave our home state and move more south. We have three places on our short list to relocate to, and Abingdon is one of them. We are artists, my husband builds guitars, we eat 95% organic food, and are conservative patriots. We THINK Abingdon would be a good fit. Can any residents give your best arguments as to why, or why not, your area is a good place to live? Thanks!

We biked on the awesome Creeper Trail too and accessed the trail easily and within walking distance from our room....Abingdon is a historical gem, like a small Savannah and Charleston. We are sad to share this news, but confident the Virginia Highlands Festival will be back and better than ever in 2021.

To our friends and fans,

It is with heavy hearts that we must announce that this year's summer Festival -- the 72nd annual Virginia Highlands Festival -- is canceled for this year.

Over the past several weeks we have monitored the COVID-19 pandemic very closely to fully understand how it might impact our 2020 summer Festival. We have already put an incredible amount of effort and expense into planning, modifying operations, and modeling out every precautionary measure possible to ensure the safety of our staff, artists, and attendees.

In the end, we found that we are unable to safely hold the 72nd annual Virginia Highlands Festival this summer as scheduled (July 24-August 2). Although there will be statements later this week and plans for reopening arts & entertainment venues throughout Virginia, the uncertainty of what will be safe for our artists and audiences, as well as our financial position necessitated making a decision now.

Over the next few days we will be in touch with our artists, vendors, sponsors, advertisers, and patrons to issue refunds, transfer reservations to next summer, and continue work on our Plein Air Abingdon festival, which will take place October 8-10.

We are immensely grateful for the support you have given us over the years and especially over the past 2 months as we have navigated these uncharted trails. Canceling this year’s summer Festival was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make, and we are acutely aware of the impact that this will have on our community.

We will continue to work with our Town, our program partners, and colleagues in the arts in whatever capacity we can to emerge from this pandemic cocoon stronger than before.

In the meantime, please do what you can to stay safe and healthy so that we can come together again next summer.

When Cinco de Mayo and Takeout Tuesday fall on the same day...it's time to celebrate! 🌮 🍹😊🍹🌮

Our Story

It's always playtime in Abingdon! Sometimes the play takes place on the stage at the famous Barter Theatre, where Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine and other entertainment giants have performed.

Other times, visitors enjoy playing in the great outdoors. Abingdon is surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, which forms a massive wilderness playground complete with rivers, lakes and trails. The Appalachian Trail is nearby and the Virginia Creeper Trail begins with mile marker zero in downtown Abingdon. Bike shops and shuttle services can get you on the trails quickly and easily.

If your idea of play time includes shopping, nightlife or live music, fun is always on tap. Main Street and the historic downtown district are filled with great restaurants and unique shops and galleries. A craft beer brewery and winery are nearby. Don’t miss Heartwood – Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway where you’ll find crafts, gifts, local food and live music.

Lovers of arts and crafts will want to visit William King Museum of Art, the Arts Depot, Holston Mountain Artisans, and numerous downtown galleries and shops.

The Abingdon Visitor Center is currently closed during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are happy to assist you by phone or email, so that we may help you plan your trip for a later date.
