Today is a big day in Abilene's history!
On This Day In History, 1956: Abilene leaders dedicated the newly opened Abilene Air Force Base at the end of the city's "Saddles to Jets" themed diamond jubilee celebration. Abilene AFB would go on to serve as a base for the Strategic Air Command and the Military Airlift Command before turning over to the Air Combat Command, AF Global Strike Command, and the Air Mobility Command. The City of Abilene and, the soon to be renamed, Dyess Air Force Base would be community partners since that day and for the foreseeable future ahead.

We love being in the heart of the Storybook Capital of America! In times like these, it's good to look around and see the things we sometimes pass by in a hurry. The storybook sculptures stand as a reminder that, in this city, we support the guardians of childhood. That childlike spirit in each of us that dreams new dreams and looks forward to a new day has never been more important.
E. Aster Bunnymund (Easter Bunny!) doesn't just deliver eggs, he's also known as the Guardian of Hope! And, it's appropriate that this sculpture sits on a hill overlooking downtown Abilene. Don't lose hope! Brighter days are ahead!

THANK YOU to our first responders and front line workers, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to support you. We set a goal of producing 500 shields and masks per day. Today, our team far exceeded that goal and cranked out almost 1,000. Now they are headed out into the medical community to protect those who are protecting us. #tigecares #tigelove

Happy Monday! For today's artifact of the week, we are looking at a different Nazi shoulder patch. This patch is from the Feuerschutzpolizei (Fire Protection Police) which was a firefighter unit in Nazi Germany and a branch of Nazi Germany's Ordnungspolizei, formed in 1938 when the German municipal professional fire brigades were transferred to the national police. While this is a Nazi Fire Protection patch from World War II, we ask that this week you thank a first responder for their service during this pandemic.
