One of the most beautiful landmarks in Taylor County: the Texas & Pacific Railroad Station was built in 1910. The last passenger train left the Depot in March 1967 with only 39 passengers aboard. Its exterior was restored in 1994 to its 1920s appearance. Today this beautiful building houses the Visit Abilene, Texas and Abilene Cultural Affairs Council who both, ironically, work to bring more “passengers” to the area.

Big on •HISTORY•

On April 18, 2019, first-time parents Amira and Kermit welcomed a new baby to the troop. The newborn monkey, the first colobus born at the Abilene Zoo since 2006, is doing well and growing fast. Zoo visitors can catch a glimpse of its adorable all-white fur peeking out from the safety of its mom's arms. The colobus exhibit is located near the giraffe terrace.

"Six-year-old Amira is being a great first-time mother," said Curator Denise Ibarra. "The other adult females are showing a lot of interest in the baby as well."

Keepers are monitoring the troop closely. We don't know yet whether the newborn is male or female. Although the baby is white now, it will begin to take on its black-and-white adult coloring over the next several months.

The Angolan Colobus are old world monkeys that range in Angola-Kenya, the name means mutilated thumb. They have black body color with a white cape, tail tip and ear and facial framing. They live in the treetops and leap long distances between trees using their tails as a brake, and they are leaf eaters in the wild.
