Finally we met the brother of Vassilis, Polichronis at the balcony of his house at Patsos. - What a great day we spent there, many thanks to the Psiharakis family.

The monument itself.
Wonderfull chapel of Agios Constantinos and Helena near the monument.
Vassilis at another monument pointing to the obduction of Kreipe.. Stanley Moss wrote a book published in 1950 about his involvement in the activities and some of his thoughts are documented on the monument.. history beeing still alive!
Lots of blooming almond trees around the area.
Wide view over to the north coast, even the gap of the gorge of Prassano is to be seen.
Archaic landscape..
Under that cliff they stayed.. probably an ancient shelter for sheep in the past.
Finally we reach the well hidden place where General Kreipe, Stanley Moss, Leigh Fermore and other participants of the obduction stayed for two days/nights.. a very moving historic place to be:

Water disappeared in most of the gorge so the walk is more easy now but still so beautiful and spectacular.

Crete will give you as much as you are ready to take from it.
Its phenomenon is diversity.
Crete is a continent.
With various nature and climate zones.
Mountains in the middle of the sea.

From east to west it has only about 260km and from north to south about 60 km in the widest place.
But that facts say nothing about the real size of this island.
Here the distance should be measured in hours, not kilometers.
If you drove from Chania to Agios Nikolaos it does not mean that you have traveled the whole island and you know everything about Crete.
The best tavern is the one where the old lady invites you to the kitchen to look into the pots, not the one where they give you long menu with photos.
Big allinclusive hotels have nothing in common with the atmosphere of Cretan village.
Samaria Gorge will not give you any idea of ​​other Cretan gorges.

Visit our Agios Antonios gorge, Bizantine churches nearby, taste delicious Maria's food in Patsos tavern, feel the village slowlife.

Yesterday Maria prepared stuffed zucchini flowers. She collected beautiful yellow flowers early in the morning when they were still open. Then she prepared stuffing: raw rice, grated onion, garlic, chopped parsley, mint, some tomato sauce, olive oil, salt, pepper, oregan.
A little bit of everything - says Maria, when I ask about proportions.
Maria gently put a spoonful of stuffing in each flower, bent the petals and put it in a pot with oil. Then poured some lemon juice and covered the pot with the plate so that the flowers do not move in the pot.
An hour of low heat cooking and dish was ready.

Dzięki Vasilisowi z Patsos Escape - Πατσός Ρεθύμνου mam niezwykłą okazję obserwować jak gotuje Maria - jego mama.
Zauważyłam że tajemnica kuchni Marii to prostota. Wcale nie używa wielu składników i przypraw. I to mi się bardzo podoba.
Niebawem przepis Marii na gemista. Chcę go najpierw zrobić sama.
Ale już dziś dzielę się z Wami przepisem na papryki z pieca nadziewane serem feta.
To proste i przepyszne danie.
1) Weź kilka czerwonych papryk i przetnij je wzdłuż. Najlepsza będzie ta dłuższa odmiana papryki.
2) Ułóż je na blasze.
3) Przygotuj nadzienie mieszając fetę z rozbełtanym jajkiem i garścią mięty (Maria by tu mnie sprostowała że to nie mięta tylko diosmo. To taka tutejsza odmiana o silnym aromacie)
4) Wypełnij papryki nadzieniem.
5) Polej suto oliwą.
6) Piecz przez około godzinę w piekarniku o temp 180 stopni
Cudowne danie na letnie dni z sałatką grecką i lekkim białym winkiem.

Thanks to Vasilis from Patsos Escape - Πατσός Ρεθύμνου I have an unusual opportunity to observe how his mother Maria cooks.
I noticed that the secret of Maria's cuisine is simplicity. She does not use many ingredients and spices at all. And I like it very much.
Soon Maria's recipe for a gemista. First I want to do it by myself.
But today I share with you the recipe for red peppers stuffed with feta cheese from the oven.
It's a simple and delicious dish.
1) Take some red peppers and cut them along. The longer type of pepper will be the best
2) Put them on a baking tray.
3) Prepare the filling by mixing feta cheese with a row egg and a handful of mint (Maria would correct me here that it's not the mint but diosmo. It's a local variety with a strong aroma)
4) Fill peppers with stuffing.
5) Pour over the oil.
6) Bake for about an hour in the oven at 180 degrees
A wonderful dish for summer days with a Greek salad and a light white wine.

One thing I'll remember most from Crete is its beautiful, untouched nature! If you ever come to Crete, be sure to visit the St Anthony Gorge, near the small village, called Patsos. We've never done much hiking before, but absolutely loved the experience and fell in love with the place. The real Crete does start when you come out of your hotel room or house!

Thank you Βασίλης Ψυχαράκης for welcoming us at your taverna! Please thank your mother once again for the delicious lunch we had! Her cheese pies were definitely the best we've ever had! And thank you for telling us all about the gorge. We went all the way to the lake and back, and then we returned the next day and did it again! That's how much we loved it

We are back home, far away from Crete with its nice cities, its imposing landscapes and friendly people.

Η Πατσός είναιι ιδανικός προορισμός και τέλειος συνδυασμός για όσους θέλουν να απολαύσουν την παρθένα φύση, κάνοντας πεζοπορία και ακολουθώντας τα ατέλειωτα μονοπάτια, που οδηγούν μέσα από την πυκνή βλάστηση σε μαγευτικά τοπία, όπως φυσικές πηγές νερού, εξωκκλήσια, σπηλιές, ρέματα… Επίσης, ιδανικός προορισμός για όσους θέλουν να γνωρίσουν από κοντά την πολιτισμική κληρονομιά και την παράδοση, γνήσια και αυθεντικά, σε όλες τις δραστηριότητες και όχι στα στημένα γεγονότα και στην βιομηχανοποιημένη «υγιεινή διατροφή». Τελος, αυτό που θα σας αποζημιώσει κατά τον καλύτερο τρόπο, ακόμη και τον πιο απαιτητικό, είναι τα ξακουστά και μοναδικά σε γεύση παραδοσιακά φαγητά της κυρίας Μαρίας, με προϊόντα παραγωγής,από το κτήμα της.
Σήμερα, το οργάνωσε μια πολύ επιτυχημένη εκδρομή,όπου οι εκλεκτοί επισκέπτες είχαν την δυνατότητα να συνδυάσουν και να απολαύσουν όλα τα παραπάνω:
1.Έμαθαν διάφορες παραδοσιακές συνταγές από την κυρία Μαρία με βοηθό της την Σταυρούλα, παρασκεύασαν μόνοι τους τα εκλεκτά φαγητά (ντολμαδάκια, τσιιγαριαστό κρέας.....).
2. Περπάτησαν μία εύκολη διαδρομή μέσα στην πυκνή βλάστηση και στα αξιοθέατα
3.Τέλος, ξεκουράστηκαν στα γαργαρα νερά της βρύσης και.απόλαυσαν τα εδέσματα που παρασκεύασαν ,κάτω από τον παχύ ίσκιο και την ομορφιά της φύσης
