Qassiarsuk, the village of Erik The Red and Leif Eriksson, is located just 3 kilometers in front of the Narsarsuaq airport, the gateway to South Greenland.🇬🇱

Right on the centre of Qassiarsuk, close to the harbour and the supermarket, and just below the statue of Leif Eriksson, is located the Leif Eriksson Hostel, a charming place where you can relax a have a drink sitting in a big wooden balcony with stunning views of mountains and icebergs.🤩

Enjoy, relax and have a quiet holiday. Make your basecamp in the Leif Eriksson Hostel and make daily adventure excursions to explore Greenland!🍀

🇬🇱Greenland 'Ice Facts'

🔹Many of the picturesque icebergs along Greenland’s west coast calve from two North Greenland glaciers, and as luck would have it, they share the same name!

🔹Blue icebergs have very little air inside while white icebergs have many air bubbles or a snowy surface. Dark stripes in icebergs come from dirt that glaciers pick up as they move from land to sea.

🔹The portion of an iceberg visible above water is only about 10% of the total iceberg.

A Greenland glacier is growing. That doesn't mean melting is over.

A glacier in #Greenland that has been rapidly melting for 20 years is finally thickening again. 🇬🇱

"NASA's Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) project has revealed Greenland’s Jakobshavn Glacier, the island’s biggest, is actually growing, at least at its edge.

In research published Monday in Nature Geoscience, researchers report that since 2016, Jakobshavn’s ice has thickened slightly, thanks to relatively cool ocean waters at its base—which have caused the glacier to slow down its melt.

This reverses the glacier’s 20-year trend of thinning and retreating. But because of what else is happening on the ice sheet, and the overall climate outlook, that’s not necessarily a good thing for global sea level."

nationalgeographic.com A pulse of cooler water at its edge let part of the glacier gain some mass. But overall, the melting across Greenland continues apace.

Iceland mayors object to Google snow

Two mayors in Iceland are campaigning to have Google Maps change its satellite image of their towns, which are shown as covered in snow.

Jón Páll Hreinsson says this could put overseas tourists off visiting Bolungarvík in the picturesque Western Fjords region, whose islands and fishing villages are already a popular summer destination for Icelanders, the RÚV public broadcaster reports.

"This snowbound image gets on my nerves," he told the Vísir news site, explaining why he sends the Google Maps site daily feedback about it - "I'll post a comment a day, until I get through to them".
