Fortaleza Ozama

It was the first permanent military structure built by the Spanish in America, at the beginning of Spanish colonization, in the early 16th century. In the center are a five-storey tower and a surveillance platform with a breathtaking view of the Ozama River. Colonial city.

Ruins of La Isabela

The first European settlement in the New World was built by Christopher Columbus here in the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata) on the banks of the Bajabonico River, with his entourage of about 1,500 Spaniards, many of them aristocrats who returned with him on his second voyage. The ruins of this settlement are still standing in this area of the bay. The historical records show that the first Catholic Mass was celebrated there, and to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the same, a modern church was built that was inaugurated in 1994.

Fortaleza san Felipe

The San Felipe Fortress in Puerto Plata is considered to be one of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean. Built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend the north coast against English, Dutch and French pirates.

Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón is an icon of La Romana; is carved in stone and is a replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village. The Stanislaus Church offers a panoramic view of the Chavon River and is highly sought after for weddings. The construction of Altos de Chavón began in 1976; was scheduled to open in 1982 with a memorable Frank Sinatra concert in the 5,000-seat amphitheater. Many artists, in their schedules of world-wide tours, include presentations in this amphitheater, especially during the long weekends. Nowadays, the village is the scene of restaurants, precious jewels, art, handicrafts and cigars. The Archaeological Museum of Altos de Chavón exhibits the indigenous culture of the area. The views over the river and the Dye Fore golf course that stretches out on the horizon, allow you to take fabulous photographs. Visitors who are not guests of the Casa de Campo resort can schedule a tour or pay the entrance fee.

Humpback Whale Watching

Samaná continues to attract visitors who want to enjoy one of the best places in the world where you can see the huge humpback whales frolicking near the coast. The observation season lasts from January 15 until March 30. Punta Balandra, on the way from Ciudad de Samaná to Las Galeras, is a strategic point to observe whales without having to board a boat.

But if you do not have a chance to observe them, the little Whale Museum offers interesting information about those that pass near Samana.

Cayo Levantado

The Limón offers an adventurous tour through its jungle landscape, before reaching the waterfall of El Limón that falls from the high part of the Sierra de Samaná, to a height of 40 meters (130 feet). The 2.5 km (1.5 mile) route can be made on foot if the person is in good physical shape, or can be done on horseback. The reward: a refreshing dip in the cool water under a majestic waterfall.

Laguna Bavaro

In this protected area you can practice kayaking, small boat trips, hiking and bird watching through mangroves and wetlands. Only the lagoon measures 3 km2 (1.15 mi2).

Merengue is a musical genre of dance originated in the Dominican Republic at the end of the 19th century. It is very popular throughout the American continent, where it is considered, along with salsa, as one of the great musical genres that distinguish the Latin American gentilicio. The Dominican merengue was played with string instruments (bandurria and / or guitar). Years later, the string instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set, with its three instruments, represents the synthesis of the three cultures that conformed the idiosyncrasy of the Dominican culture. The European influence comes to be represented by the accordion, the African by the tambora, which is a drum of two patches, and the taína or aboriginal by the güira.
