Fortaleza Ozama

Humpback Whale Watching

Samaná continues to attract visitors who want to enjoy one of the best places in the world where you can see the huge humpback whales frolicking near the coast. The observation season lasts from January 15 until March 30. Punta Balandra, on the way from Ciudad de Samaná to Las Galeras, is a strategic point to observe whales without having to board a boat.

But if you do not have a chance to observe them, the little Whale Museum offers interesting information about those that pass near Samana.

Cayo Levantado

The Limón offers an adventurous tour through its jungle landscape, before reaching the waterfall of El Limón that falls from the high part of the Sierra de Samaná, to a height of 40 meters (130 feet). The 2.5 km (1.5 mile) route can be made on foot if the person is in good physical shape, or can be done on horseback. The reward: a refreshing dip in the cool water under a majestic waterfall.

Laguna Bavaro

In this protected area you can practice kayaking, small boat trips, hiking and bird watching through mangroves and wetlands. Only the lagoon measures 3 km2 (1.15 mi2).

Merengue is a musical genre of dance originated in the Dominican Republic at the end of the 19th century. It is very popular throughout the American continent, where it is considered, along with salsa, as one of the great musical genres that distinguish the Latin American gentilicio. The Dominican merengue was played with string instruments (bandurria and / or guitar). Years later, the string instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set, with its three instruments, represents the synthesis of the three cultures that conformed the idiosyncrasy of the Dominican culture. SALINAS.-Salt and Gypsum has an extension of approximately 21km2 and is formed by powerful layers of salt and gypsum, with intercalations of packages of soft clay slates. These sequences were formed by evaporiptic processes from the brines contained in shallow closed or restricted waters. The salt layers were the first to be attributed a special interest, in the community of Las Salinas in the province of Barahona, the estimated plaster reserve is 800 million metric tons and 70 million tons of Salt Gema. Constituting the second deposit of importance in all Latin America.
