A visit to the duchess @butera28apartments is a highlight of our culinary tour to Sicily. It’s filled with colour, smiles, warmth and charm as the duchess leads us through food stories and experiences. Last year she prepared these very slow cooked Sicilian cherry tomatoes, firstly sprinkled with sugar and then slow roasted for over an hour. Served with deliciously prepared tuna, they just popped in your mouth. So sweet and juicy! A visit to a Sicilian street market is the best way to observe and capture a glimpse of every day life on this chaotic and colourful island. Men in suits, women in mini skirts, Nonna’s dressed up having first been to church and then negotiating with store vendors the price of the produce for their lunchtime meal. This is just a glimpse, let me show you more. You can wander the market with me as I talk all things Sicilian or at your own pace and I’ll meet you at the end where Giuseppe and his mum might just sing you a love song!! Salted olives have now been rinsed, dried in oven for 10 minutes, placed in jars with garlic, herbs and chilies! They are so yummy!!

Dinner with this guy! Our cousin Seby @sebapisa from Birregurra! He made us homemade cavateddi pasta with pine mushrooms he foraged for in the afternoon and a beautiful antipasto with homemade focaccia.

Green and light purple olives in brine for 5 weeks with lemon. The Kalamata and Ligurian soaking for 1 month in salted water. Will show you the finished product then!

Mixed with salt, in a basket, cover and toss daily for 2 to 3 weeks! Sicilian dried and cured olives in the making.

The setting will be the relaxing atmosphere of my Mamma’s home and garden, where I grew up. Inspired by the aromas and seasonal dishes which my Nonna and Mamma lovingly created. Our Celebrating Mammas Cooking Demonstration menu will be seasonal, fresh and flavoursome.

My dearly departed cousin Rosa taught me to make this strawberry torte. It has a beautiful sweet crisp pastry base, vanilla and lemon creme patisserie and strawberries glazed with warm apricot jam. I was about 15 when she taught me how to make it. I’ve been thinking about her much lately. Tonight I share it with my family in her honour. #missyoucuz

Mamma’s kitchen table set for a pizza night to farewell her god-daughter Rita and her partner Bernd from Germany. Going to be a sad farewell but first we eat!! Mamma has set the table with an Easter candle, napkins and Lindt bunny eggs!

My papa used to be a fruit carrier agent in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. He sold apples on behalf of some of the well known apple growers on the Mornington Peninsula. He had a big red truck with “D Mirabella and Sons Somerville” written on it. Sometimes my best friend Lynette and I used to hitch a ride with him to the old Footscray Wholesale Market. We’d leave home just after midnight, take our seats in the cabin area, and listen to the tunes of dad’s Mario Lanza tapes! We quickly fell asleep! My dad would eventually wake us and take us on a forklift ride up and down the aisles as he waved to all his friends and collected produce for our fruit and vegetable store. It always amazed me how handsome my papa looked in a white shirt and tie and his leather apron. Nobody else dressed like him at the market! The highlight for Lynette and I was always breakfast. We’d stop at Josephine’s cafe in North Melbourne opposite the Victoria Market. Dad would spoil us and let us have whatever we wanted. On the days when I didn’t go with my father to the market, I’d hear him leave as he would rev up the engine of his big red truck and head down the gravel driveway on the side of our house. I’d turn my light on, lift up my bedroom blind and wave to him. He had the cabin light on and would wave back! It was the highlight of my day. How can I forget such a hardworking, honest and generous man that was my father? He was the best role model a little girl could ever wish for. #missyoupapa

What an amazing experience today. Talking Sicily, family food, traditions and about beautiful wines with Selma from Elan vineyard and Winery. Thank you Selma. We are like minded, strong and passionate women! It was wonderful having my girls and Michael helping too!

Reunited after 43 years. My cousin Rita is my mother Pina’s god-daughter. She moved back to Germany with her mother and three siblings 43 years ago. Today was an emotional but happy reunion for them both. It warned my heart to watch them hand in hand wandering through papa’s garden remembering him and the generosity he shared with their family.
