As another year draws to a close, the Lincolnshire Echo looks at some top holiday destinations for 2016 and offers to visit Armenia, among others.

“Armenia is a Christian nation on Asia’s edge, where east and west collide, bordering Turkey, Georgia, Iran and Azerbaijan,” explains Kerry O’Neill, of Secret Compass, which organizes the Armenia: Fables, Myths and Legends expedition.

One of the main attractions of the Armavir is the Cathedral — the most ancient Christian temple of Armenia , one of the first in entire Christian world. The first stone of the temple, as the legend goes, was laid in 30 by the first Catholicos of Armenian Church.

В комплекс Эчмиадзинского монастыря входят трапезная (XVII век), гостиница (XVIII век), Резиденция Католикоса (1738-1741), школа (1813), каменный водоём (1846) и другие постройки. Слева от входа на территорию монастыря - Эчмиадзинская типография (первая в Армении), основанная в 1772 году, а справа - кельи монахов.
На территории монастырского двора особого внимания заслуживают два древних хачкара. Хачкары – так называемые - крест-камни, которые устанавливались в честь всех знаменательных событий. Один хачкар был высечен в XIII , другой в XVII веке. Оба покрыты сложным орнаментом, изображениями животных и птиц. Здесь же установлен современный памятник-хачкар армянским жертвам геноцида 1915 года.

The complex of Echmiadzin Monastery comprises the refectory (17 th century), the hotel (18 th century), the residence of Catholicos (1738-1741), the school (1813), the stone reservoir (1846) and other structures. On the left from the entrance leading to the monastery territory is Echmiadzin printing house (the first one in Armenia ) established in 1772, and on the right – monks' cells.
The most noticeable objects in the monastery courtyard are two ancient khachkars. Khachkars are the so-called cross-stones which were put to commemorate every significant event.
The first khachkar was cut in the 13 th century the other - in the 17 th century. Both are covered with the intricate ornament and the images of animals and birds. There is also the modern monument-khachkar to Armenians the victims of genocide.
