"Armenian Christmas," as it is popularly called, is a culmination of celebrations of events related to Christ's Incarnation. Theophany or Epiphany (or Astvadz-a-haytnootyoon in Armenian) means "revelation of God," which is the central theme of the Christmas Season in the Armenian Church. During the "Armenian Christmas" season, the major events that are celebrated are the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and His Baptism in the River Jordan. The day of this major feast in the Armenian Church is January 6th. A ceremony called "Blessing of Water" is conducted in the Armenian Church to commemorate Christ's Baptism.
It is frequently asked as to why Armenians do not celebrate Christmas on December 25th with the rest of the world. Obviously, the exact date of Christ's birth has not been historically established-it is neither recorded in the Gospels. However, historically, all Christian churches celebrated Christ's birth on January 6th until the fourth century.
According to Roman Catholic sources, the date was changed from January 6th to December 25th in order to override a pagan feast dedicated to the birth of the Sun which was celebrated on December 25th. At the time Christians used to continue their observance of these pagan festivities. In order to undermine and subdue this pagan practice, the church hierarchy designated December 25th as the official date of Christmas and January 6th as the feast of Epiphany. However, Armenia was not effected by this change for the simple fact that there were no such pagan practices in Armenia, on that date, and the fact that the Armenian Church was not a satellite of the Roman Church. Thus, remaining faithful to the traditions of their forefathers, Armenians have continued to celebrate Christmas on January 6th until today.

The beautiful Mount Ara - 2614 m (8,576 ft)
Great place for your day hike!
Named after Ara the Beautiful, a legendary king of Armenia. The story is that an Assyrian queen Semiramis was deeply in love with Ara. She wanted to connect Assyria and Armenia and rule together with Ara. But all her efforts were in vain, as Ara was not interested in her. Semiramis’ heart was broken and she declared war on Armenia in hope of taking Ara for herself. The battle took place on the slopes of the mountain and, to Semiramis’ dismay, Ara was killed.Semiramis didn’t want to accept the fact that Ara was no longer alive and ordered to take his body to the top of mountain, where Aralezes, a mythical dog-like creature with healing powers, would lick his wounds and bring him back to life. This story was likely inspired by the mountain’s shape, which, if you look carefully, has the shape of a lying man.

Cold months are slowly approaching and it is the best time for Armenian Tolma!
Tolma is prepared from minced beef (or lamb) mixed with rice, fresh herbs and spices wrapped in grape (or cabbage) leaves. Served of course with yogurt based sauce with garlic/mint!
The word tolma itself comes from Armenian word 'toli', which means grape vine!
Well, Bon Appétit!

COMMEMORATIVE KHÁCHKAR "RESURRECTION" "Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance" (Ps. 28. 9). "
Khachkars are outdoor, vertically erected stelespesitioned in relation to the four cardinal points of the world. Their western side has au ormanantally carved central cross, sur- rounded with vegetal and geometrical ornaments, anlsometinos ompositions with birds, animals or anthropomorphic pictures. Khachkars are'a Voicuesult and criterion of Armenian cultural development, one of the most typical syirie f Armenian identity. None of the Middle-East Christian peoples has created similar maninits, thus the khachkars are also one of the most distinctive features of Armenian culture. The main part of khachkars was created in the 9th 17 centuries. 10 Khachkar creating is one of the unique and traditional handicrafts of Armenian culture which revived in the 1960-es and is now being developed and widely spread. Nowadays number of khachkar masters are working and creating various cros-stones on diverse occasions and purposes, starting with the repetition of classic samples up to newly creat ed ones. From this viewpoint, the newly created commemorative khachkar "Prayer" in Vayk has a very significant role in khachkar creating art. The project of the master Varazdat Hambartsumyan was to choose the classic and well known khachkar samples and to combine them in a mount-like architectural construction. On one hand it looks like a small illustrated encyclopedia of khachkars, as it represents the different schools of Aragatzotn-Kotayk, Arsakh, Gegharkunik, Lori-Tashir, Vayots Dzor, Julfa) and diverse styles of khachkars, showing various and interesting manifestations of this art. On the other hand, we see the architectural building rising to the sky as a symbol of the stead- fastness and eternity of Armenian culture. According to the master, it is the common prayer of Armenians to God.

#Stepanavan #Dendropark is the first botanic garden of Armenia. It was established by Polish engineerforester Edmon Leonovich who had worked as the director of the botanical garden since 1984. Afterwards his son took the position of director. Local climate at dendropark is cool as the area of 1550 meters above the sea level. The collection of plants growing here represents a great variety. Most specimens were acquired from the botanic gardens as part of an international exchange programs with the Botanic Gardens in Tbilisi, Kiev, Moscow as well as Far East. Specimens were also obtained further afield from Germany, France, Portugal, USA.
The collection of plants represents a great scientific development of species in uncommon climatic conditions. For 30 years continuously the scientists had tested 2500 species of plants try to find out those that would survive here. But only 500 species and forms of trees could succeed in growing in the cold climate that belong to 27 families and 115 species including Betula, Juglans, Cedrus deodara, Sequoia, etc.

The “#Treasury of #Echmiadzin” museum was designed by architect Baghdasar Arzumanyan and opened to visitors on October 11, 1982. The treasury-museum is a vivid example of new and unique elements in classical Armenian architecture. The “Treasury of Echmiadzin” is named after philanthropists and patrons of art Alec and Maria Manukyans, thanks to whose donations this wonderful project was successfully fulfilled. The bodies of the spouses now rest in the courtyard of the museum.
The museum keeps the relics of the Armenian Church, and also there is a library of Catholicos Garegin I. The samples exhibited in the treasury were brought to the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin from different parts of the world and Armenian communities. These samples testify the skill and high creative spirit of the Armenian masters of different eras, as well as the unique perception of beauty. The treasury contains many valuable church relics and samples of applied art: bowls, chandeliers, altar curtains, holy relics, patriarchal crosses and wands, church robes embroidered with gold and pearls, ancient Armenian carpets, wooden engravings and numerous ritual objects of gold, silver and ivory delicately decorated with precious stones. Among valuable exhibits of the treasury are manuscripts with their unique miniatures and thinly embroidered bowls. The museum holds a collection of images of Holy Mother of God, which were created by Armenian masters in different epochs of historical Armenia. Also noteworthy are the 17th-century thrones of Catholicos, decorated with pearls and ivory. The treasury features unique sacred relics, including St. Gegard - the sharpest spear with which the centurion pierced the crucified Jesus.
