A passenger plane with 58 people on board has plunged into a river outside the Taiwanese capital Taipei, killing nine people, according to national media reports.
About 16 people were rescued, but dozens were still trapped inside, reports said.
The TransAsia ATR 72-600 turboprop plane was on a domestic flight when it hit a road bridge before crashing into the river, the reports said. Rescuers were trying to reach the trapped passengers, they said.
Television footage showed passengers wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the river.
Emergency rescue officials in inflatable boats crowded around the partially submerged fuselage, lying on its side in the river, trying to help those on board.
The civilian aeronautic authority said soon after the crash that two people had been killed. Taiwanese television later reported the death toll had risen to nine.
The aeronautic authority reported 16 people had been rescued, meaning as many as 33 people were still missing, according to the Reuters news agency..
Other Taiwanese government authorities said the plane was carrying 58 passengers and crew, including 31 tourists from mainland China, the agency said.
The weather appeared to be clear when the plane took off. Television pictures also showed some damage to a bridge next to the river, with small pieces of the aircraft scattered along the road.
The crash-landing is the latest in a string of mishaps to hit Asian carriers in the past 12 months. An AirAsia jet bound for Singapore crashed soon after taking off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya on December 28, killing all 162 people on board.
Also last year, a Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared and one of its sister planes was downed over Ukraine with a combined loss of 539 lives.
TransAsia is Taiwan's third-largest carrier. One of its ATR 72-500 planes crashed while trying to land at Penghu Island last year, killing 48 of the 58 passengers and crew on board.
The plane involved in Wednesday's mishap was among the first of the ATR 72-600s, the latest variant of the turboprop aircraft, that TransAsia received in 2014.
They are among an order of eight placed by TransAsia in 2012. The aircraft have 72 seats each. The planes are mainly used to connect Taiwan's capital, Taipei, to the island's smaller cities.

Band Amir - Bamyan is consist of six deep blue lakes separated by natural dams made of mineral deposit. The lakes are situated in the Hindu Kush mountains of central Afghanistan at approximately 3000 m of elevation, west of the famous Buddhas of Bamyan.

Band Amir is one of the few rare natural lakes in the world which are created by travertine systems, meanwhile the site of Band Amir has been described as Afghanistan's Grand Canyon and draws thousands of tourists a year.

Progress in concluding the drama of the AirAsia flight that crashed in the sea off Indonesia continues very slowly, as three more bodies are found, and divers continue to wait for better weather.

The bodies bring the total of confirmed dead to 37 on the 162 people on the Airbus, which divers think they have found on the bottom of the ocean.

The plane’s tail fin has now been brought on ship, and along with other debris is suggesting the flight’s end was quick and violent with no room for maneuver for the pilots and crew.

Indonesian authorities continue their investigation, which has suspended a number of airline authority officials, and revealed that AirAsia flight 8501 took off with no latest weather report to guide it to Singapore.

Domestic air companies flying permits have been called in for investigation and companies in violation of them have been told they will be suspended from flying. Indonesian operators have suffered from poor reputations in the past that the government says it is determined to improve.

6 dead after plane crashes into Maryland home Monday Dec 08, 2014:

A small, private jet slammed into a house Monday, killing a woman and her young sons inside the home and three people on the aircraft, authorities said.

The jet crashed around 10:45 a.m. in Gaithersburg, a Washington, D.C., suburb, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Lohr said during a news conference.

Authorities quickly said all three people in the plane had been killed, but it took hours for fire crews to sweep the home and confirm that three people were inside. They were identified as 36-year-old Marie Gemmell and her two sons, 3-year-old Cole and a 1-month-old Devon, police said.

They were found in a second-floor bathroom. Gemmell was lying on top of her young sons in an apparent effort to shield them from the smoke and fire, said police Capt. Paul Starks. Her husband and a school-age daughter were not home and were accounted for, police said.

The fuselage of the jet crashed into the front lawn of an adjacent home, which was heavily damaged by fire, and investigators believe one of its wings, which had fuel inside, was sheared off and tore through the front of the Gemmell home, said Robert Sumwalt, a National Transportation Safety Board member. Witnesses reported seeing and hearing a secondary explosion after the plane hit the ground.

The two-story, wood-frame home was gutted. The first floor was nearly completely blown out and smoke drifted from a gaping hole in what was left of the collapsing roof. No one was injured in the adjacent homes that also had major damage.

The founder and CEO of a North Carolina clinical research organization was among those on the plane. Health Decisions of Durham, North Carolina, said in a news release that Dr. Michael Rosenberg was among those killed.

Rosenberg was a pilot who crashed a different plane in Gaithersburg on March 1, 2010, according a government official who wasn't authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named. Investigators are still trying to determine if Rosenberg was at the controls at the time of Monday's crash.

Fred Pedreira, 67, who lives near the crash site, said he had just returned home from the grocery store and was parking his car when he saw the jet and immediately knew something was wrong.

"This guy, when I saw him, for a fast jet with the wheels down, I said, 'I think he's coming in too low,'" Pedreira told The Associated Press. "Then he was 90 degrees — sideways — and then he went belly-up into the house and it was a ball of fire. It was terrible.

"I tell you, I got goosebumps when I saw it," Pedreira said. "I said, 'My God, those are people in that plane.'"

Emily Gradwohl, 22, who lives two doors down from the house the jet hit, was home at the time and ran outside to see what had happened.

"I heard like a loud crash, and the whole house just shook," Gradwohl told The AP. "We got jackets on, ran outside and saw one of the houses completely set on fire."

She said planes fly low over the neighborhood every day but she had never worried about a crash.

The Embrarer EMB-500/Phenom 100 twin-engine jet, which seats six people, was on approach to Montgomery County Airpark, which is about a mile from the crash site, officials said. A team of NTSB investigators recovered the cockpit voice and flight data recorders from the downed plane.

The agency planned to look into everything that could have led to the crash, including crew experience and proficiency, training and procedures, equipment performance, weather and other environmental factors such as birds, Sumwalt said.

Airbus Inches Closer to Boeing in 2014 Order Race:

Airbus booked firm orders for 248 airplanes during the month of November, raising its net total for the year to 1,031 and increasing its backlog to more than 6,000 airplanes for the first time ever. Deliveries during the month reached a total of 61, as the company does its best to keep pace with the exploding demand for airliners and mitigate lengthy lead times.

Airbus’s impressive sales showing during the month of November drew it closer to Boeing in the race for bragging rights in 2014, but not by much. For its part, Boeing drew gross orders for 224 airplanes during the month of November, including the closure of a deal announced December 1 with Ryanair covering a hundred 737 Max 200s. Boeing collected net orders for 1,274 airplanes as the end of November, passing its year-end target of 1,100 set at the start of 2014.

In the widebody category, U.S.-based Delta Air Lines placed a firm order for 25 A350-900s, while Air Mauritius confirmed its order for four, bringing total A350 XWB bookings to 778 examples for 41 customers. Another new widebody project—the A330neo—drew its first firm orders since its launch in July with a contract involving Delta Air Lines covering 25 A330-900s and a deal with CIT Group for 15 of the type.

In the narrowbody category, Azul Brazilian Airlines’ ordered 25 A320neos and 10 A321neos, CIT Group ordered five A321ceos airliners, New York-based JetBlue Airways ordered 10 A321neos and Denver-based Frontier Airlines signed for nine A321ceos.

Three major A320-family orders came from undisclosed customers. One involved 30 A320neos, 14 A320ceos and six A319ceos; another covered 30 A320ceost, while the third comprised 15 A320neos, 13 A320ceos, 10 A321ceos and two A319ceos.

November’s deliveries consisted of 46 A320-family jetliners, 12 A330s and three A380s. By the end of the month Airbus had delivered 554 aircraft to 85 customers, including the first directly purchased Airbus jetliner by Vietnam’s VietJet Air, which took an A320ceo, and the initial A330-200 Freighter directly acquired from Airbus by Qatar Airways.

Based on the month’s activity, Airbus’ backlog at the end of November stood at the record total of 6,036 jetliners.
